
Most foreigners living in Guangzhou are pious Muslims coming from Middle Eastern countries. They are often seen to go to worship at local mosques. 
Islam is one of the three major religions of the world, and it came to and prospered in China in the Tang Dynasty (AD618-907).
Therefore, the very first mosque in China was also established in the Tang Dynasty. For Muslims, the mosque is not only a place for worship, but also a political, economic and cultural center.
Now let′s look at 10 major mosques in China.

Guang Pagoda, at the south-western corner of Huaisheng Mosque, is one of the oldest and most typical Islamic buildings in China.
Jingjue Mosque is located on Sanshan Road, Nanjing City, China. Established in 1368, it is the first mosque in Nanjing. From the Ming and Qing Dynasties, many ancient Chinese scholars conducted academic activities here, such as writing books, and therefore exerted a strong influence on Chin′s Islam culture. Up till now, Jingjue Mosque is still the place where Muslims hold Islamic events.
Huajue Xiang Mosque is located in Huajue Xiang Lane, Xi′an City, Shanxi Province, China. Preserved in the mosque are tablets, plaques and couplets with Chinese, Arabic and Persian inscriptions, and antiques such as censers, phylacteries, paintings and lamps, including a Koran transcribed by a renowned Muslim nobleman in the Yuan Dynasty.
Huajue Xiang Mosque once served as a scripture school and thus became the headquarters of Shanxi School in China′s Islamic education.
Nanguan Mosque is located in Yinchuan City, China. It was built in the late Ming Dynasty, and rebuilt in 1980. The mosque is roofed with green vaults. The lower part of it includes bathrooms, little halls for worship and the imam′s bedroom, all of which are connected by winding corridors. And the upper part of the mosque is a big house for worship, which can hold a thousand worshipers.
Dongguan Mosque is an iconic building in Xining City, Qinghai Province, China. It combines the styles of typical ancient Chinese building and unique ethnic building.
It is a magnificent building with curved beams, colorful eaves and a main hall that can house over 3000 worshipers. Inside the mosque, wherever you go, you can find yourself soaked in a quaint, solemn Islamic atmosphere.
Xiguan Mosque in Lanzhou was established by traveling Muslim merchants. Located on Xiguan Road, Lanzhou, it was first built in the Ming Dynasty and rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty. However, part of it was then demolished.

In March, 1986, the government of Lanzhou city began to renovate Xiguan Mosque. It took over 2 years and 1.45 million yuan to build a worship hall covering 3000㎡, offices, lecture halls, dormitories, storage rooms, bathrooms and a little worship house for women. After the renovation, Xiguan Mosque stood out among the mosques in China. It was rated as one of the top 10 buildings in Hangzhou in 1992.
