Recent reports from Chinese demographers have shown that the Middle Kingdom's population is actually a whopping 80 million less than official estimates -- 1.29 billion as opposed to 1.37.

This makes India the world's most populous nation with an official population of over 1.3 billion.
The huge miscount is most likely due to an error in the number of new births counted in recent years. There were 377.6 million new births from 1991 to 2016, less than the official figure of 464.8 million.
The aging crisis in China is worse than previously thought, with a rapidly increasing population of people over 60 as well as a declining workforce.
This problem is in part due to China's one child policy, which was only eased in 2011.

A demographer at Peking University has claimed the same. "The government has overestimated the birth rate and underestimated the speed of demographic changes," he said. Other researchers have also voiced their agreement on the figures.

The population data since the adaption of one-child policy has been seriously false and the family planning report has been overstated by 30%. The birth control policy which has last nearly four decades is not in accordance with reality. It is imperative that the government should abandon the family planning system.
Officials originally estimated India would surpass China's population by around 2022, however if these claims are true it looks like the South Asian country has already done that 5 years early.
