Living In China For 10 Days
VS. For 10 Years?
When you came to China at the very beginning, you were in discomfort, feeling upset about unfamiliar surroundings. Day in and day out, being exposed to Chinese culture, you gradually get used to the life here. That’s really a kind of unique experience.

How to know that you’ve been living in China for a certain while? Let’s see!
1
-Drinking "Hot Water"-
As a newcomer
I have been drinking cool water all these time! Btw... is it really OK for us to drink such heated, boiled hot water???

Long time living here
You come to realize how capable of hot water is, and even start to differentiate the efficacy of cool/hot food.

In menstruation? Then drink more hot water. Get a cold? Then drink more hot water! That’s how I tell my friends when I come back to my country.
Blow on, take a sip, blow on, and then take a sip, again and again... god, I love this feel!

-Shopping-
As a newcomer
Because of language barriers, you often got confused about those products with Chinese packages and shop assistants who didn’t know English when you came to China the first time. You asked for help many times, and you also got deceived many times.

Long time living here
You can distinguish the fake from various goods. Moreover, you become a master of bargain, even better than the locals!

Oh, dear, for God sake, you must can do it cheaper!

-Ordering Meals-
As a newcomer
You’ve heard so much Chinese food, but you did not actually figure out what are they. And you were always puzzled with dishes which got weird English names.

What should I do with such all-Chinese menu??? Whatever...
Long time living here
Nǐ hăo, wǒ yào yi fèn bái qiē jī, xiè xiè. (Hello, please give me a boiled chicken with sauce, thank you. )

-Toilet-
As a newcomer
What??? a squat toilet? You gotta be kidding me!

......My legs went numb after that!
Long time living here
You seem to agree that squat toilet is one of the greatest things here in public places.

Well, I have to say, it (the squat toilet) makes me feel safer and better, public closestools are really awful!
5
-Take Buses/Metro-
As a newcomer
You were courteous, smiling, being a gentleman all the time and saying“Lady First”.
Long time living here
Want to successfully crush into buses or metro? It’s a fight!

Who crushes in it, who wins.
……
After a long long period living here, you become a “Chinese-style” foreigner.
As the locals, you eat in food stalls, you think that jaywalking is not a big deal, and you can speak Mandarin more and more fluently.
See? You are not a newcomer any longer!
You are falling in love with this country, you never expect that you will leave here. So, how do you feel having been in China for a long time?
