It is reported that HAMBURG BAY, the container vessel of ZIM collided with TOLTEN, the container vessel of Hapag-Lloyd in Karachi port, Pakistan.


The incident left a heavy loss to the containers and the vessels, because of which, the traffic remained suspended! So what’s going on out there?



What happened?


According to the details, operations at the South Asia Port Terminal Limited (SAPT) got suspended after two vessels collided while berthing at SAPT-3 of Karachi Port trust (KPT). The administration managed to avert possible damage to the cranes installed at the berth.

We can learn from the video that the sever collision resulted in great damages on containers.

Twenty one containers were drown after the vessel Mv Tolten collided with the vessels with Mv Hamburg Bay berthed at South Asia Port Terminal Limited (SAPT). An operation was started after the incident, and the traffic remained suspended for few hours.  



Many carriers get involved


The container vessel Mv Tolten carrying containers reached Karachi port area leaving the last port Jebel Ali which is a large commercial port on the southern outskirts of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates whereas Mv Hamburg Bay got berthed at Karachi port area on the same day from Port of Colombo which is the largest port in Sri Lanka.

Viewing from the above schedule, we know that the ship has called at ports of Tianjin, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen Bay and Dachan Bay before.

Meanwhile, according to the data, besides from ZIM, co-shipping carriers are also concerning OOCL, HPL, SMLine and ANL.



Why did the collision happen?


It is informed that the collision happened due to the Tug boat pilot who was trying to berth the vessel Mv Tolten after its arrival at South Asia Port Terminal Limited (SAPT), the vessels was loaded with different containers to its height.

Yet so far, the exact and detailed causes still remain unknown. Fortunately, there is no casualty or pollution report.
