Police in Zhuhai wiped out all illegal currency exchange stores located at the Gongbei Underground Mall on Sunday, with over 100 individuals arrested.

With the Gongbei Port posting over 400,000 border crossings between Macau and Zhuhai per day, there had been a great demand by travellers from the two sides of the border to exchange currencies in the Underground Mall.

Workers from some of the currency exchange stores had allegedly pilfered clients’ money whilst counting out banknotes.

The Zhuhai police indicated that the investigations are still ongoing, advising residents and tourists to exchange currencies at licensed stores.
At present, there are three
legal exchange institutions in Zhuhai
The bank
A personal foreign currency exchange authorized institution approved by the state administration of foreign exchange
The foreign currency exchange institution authorized by the bank

According to the relevant law, if both parties involved make the illegal currency exchange, they will face administrative penalty. If the illegal currency exchange is more than $200,000, the two parties will be severely punished for criminal responsibility.
