House-Cleaning

Every time when the Spring Festival comes, Chinese people would take an overall cleaning, including cleaning furnitures, bedclothes and curtains. This tradition shows Chinese people`s wish of destroying the old and establishing the new, people try to make their house tidy to welcome the new year.

Spring Couplets

Chinese Spring Couples, as an unique Chinese style literature, are to use beautiful words to describe the wonderful times and express the best wishes. Everytime when the Spring Festival comes, each family would choose its favourite spring couplets and paste them on the doors, to light up the atmosphere.

Family Reunion Dinner

Having Reunion Dinner is the most cheerful moment of Chinese New Year, every family will cover the dinning table with delicious dishes. Family members would all sit by the table and chat with each other, sharing the feeling of happiness.

The Family Reunion Dinner makes the relationship of family members closer. The elder are satisfied with familiy`s company; and the younger are able express their gratitude to parents.

Light Off Firecracker

At the dawn of the first day of Chinese New Year, the first thing Chinese people will do is to open the door and light off frecrackers.

Once upon a time, there was a monster named Nian. By the end of each year, Nian would attack the villages and killed a lot of peolpe. Laterly, people discovered that Monster Nian was fear of loud noise, fire light and red color, so people use the firecracker to drive Nian away , and gradually, lighting off firecrackers become a tradition of spring festival.

Lucky Money

The original purpose of Lucky Money is that, people believed children`re easier to be attacked by evil ghost, so elder peolpe give children Lucky Money as defense to bad things. Now, Lucky Money become the best wishes for Children, means healthy life and safety.

Visit Relatives

On the First day of Chinese New Year, people would get up early and put on their best clothes, then go visiting relatives and friends. People would greet each other with best words, and express good wishes to the new year.

The younger should express wishes like “living a long & healthy life ”to the elder, and then t he elder would give lucky money to them.

Flower Market

If you are living in Guangzhou, don`t forget to go to its unique flower market.

The flower market usually start 3 days before the Spring Festival, and most goods would reduce prices on the eve of Spring Festival. On that night, great amount of people will go buy some flowers like peach, narcissus and citrus tress, which mean lukcy and wealth.
