Virtual transit cards in mobile phones will offer a more convenient future for getting around in Guangzhou.

Yangchengtong(in Chinese 羊城通) transit card company in Guangzhou reached an agreement with Alipay on April 24 for what is called an "Internet Plus" mode of transport.
In the near future, physical transit cards will be scanned by Alipay, and a special QR code will be created in your phone.

That code will give you access to public transportation, such as buses and metro rides.
"Yangchengtong transit card has a large user base in Guangzhou, while Alipay does well in payment, ID authentication, credit, finance and big data," said Liu Xiaojie, general manager of the public service department with Ant Financial Services Group, formerly known as Alipay.
"Their cooperation makes going out more intelligent and convenient."

Yangchengtong company has issued over 55 million cards so far, the largest card rollout of its kind in south China.
Usages
The card has almost become a necessity for Guangzhou citizens.
It can be used not only for taking bus or metro, but also in some convenient stores, supermarkets, fast-food restaurants and parking lots.

How to Recharge?
The online recharge of physical transit cards began in May 2014, via multiple channels, including:
Yangchengtong's official website
App
Self-service machines
Alipay

A record of over 3.65 million recharge cases through Alipay by 2016 was announced by Ant Financial.
Benefits of This Payment Via Alipay
It will spare passengers the trouble of recharging from time to time. If your virtual transit card runs out of money, other channels on this third party payment platform will offer support, such as bank balance, debit card, or credit card.
Users don’t need to worry about situations like losing cards or leaving cards at home, because they have the card with them if they are out with their cellphones.
