Community social workers in Guangzhou, Yuexiu district are offering free Chinese lessons to foreigners every weekday afternoon.
The lessons are being given at the Community Office of Foreigners Assistance on Dengfeng Jie (in Chinese 登峰街), near Exit D of the Xiaobei(in Chinese 小北) metro station, Line 5.
Lessons are offered in both English and French. The Chinese language program began in 2012, with approximately 5,000 foreigners taking the lessons annually.
“We often have about 10 students in the class every day,”“Sometimes we have more than 50 students crowded in the room.” said Wang Haige, a social worker in the community office.
Participants are primarily foreign business people and students who have urgent needs to learn Chinese to conduct business locally and to live more comfortably here.

Having a Chinese test to assess the level of his facility with the language.

Since student mobility in the class is high, traditional systematic teaching method are not suitable. Hence, social workers focus on teaching students daily conversations and improving their listening and speaking skills.
Thanks to the Pinyin teaching method, many foreign students can speak fluent Chinese after a few months, Wang said.
