China’s State Administration for Industry and Commerce has banned companies from registering “weird” names, according to a set of guidelines that went into effect recently.

Entrepreneurs in the country have in the past registered their companies under rather interesting names.

“King of Nanning, Guangxi, and His Friends Trading Co., Ltd.”
“Beijing Under My Wife’s Thumb Technology Co., Ltd.”
More famously, a company named
"There is a Group of Young People with Dreams, Who Believe They Can Make the Wonders of Life Under the Leadership of Uncle Niu Internet Technology Co., Ltd." recently went viral on Chinese social media.
Any guesses for what they sell? We didn’t have a clue either, but turns out it’s condoms…

The list of 33 new rules includes things like:
🚫 Banning the use of complete phrases – or even paragraphs for that matter. You know things are weird when you need a rule for that…
🚫 Any references to terrorism, extremism, and former Chinese leaders in the names of registered businesses.
🚫 Companies are further prohibited from claiming to be “the best” or “national”, and can no longer make duplicate name registrations, which should in theory help to cut down on copycat brands.
Simplified Name Pre-approval Policy In GZ
So if you register a company in GZ, maybe you can benefit from some good policies which have been implemented on March 31st.

Shorten the Handling Time
Now, it takes only 1 working day to get the Company’s Name Pre-approval after submitting the information online.
Reflect Industrial Features
Under the reform, company names, which are not listed in the national economy industry but can reflect the features of the industry or your firm are also available.
That means your company could be named such as “Cross-Border E-Commerce”, “Bonded Exhibition”, “Entrepot Trade”, “Service Trade”, “Incubator”, “Makerspace”, “Maker” etc.
Abbreviate the Company Name
If you set up a foreign business with a starting capital of more than ¥50,000,000, then your company will be named as “Guangzhou XXX Co., Ltd”, in Chinese “广州XXX有限公司”, which is the abbreviated name without detailed industrial expressions.
