China's railway network has launched a new frequent traveller plan where members will get points for every ticket purchase that can later be redeemed for other tickets. The new scheme has launched today and you can register for an account on official website or at a station service counter.

How to Calculate the Points?

The new service is available to both Chinese and foreigners, both residents and travellers. To apply for membership you can use an Chinese ID card or a passport and only for people who are 12 years old and above.

Credits acquired for each journey are based off the price paid for the ticket, earning five times as many credits as the price paid. eg.

  • 500 credits for a 100RMB fare.

  • Each 100 credits will be worth one yuan which can be used to buy other railway tickets with and credits will expire after 12 months if not used.

Except For These Cases

Exceptionally, buying the following kinds of tickets cannot get points, including:

  • International train tickets,

  • Shuttle tickets between mainland cities and HK,

  • Specific railways tickets from non-controlling companies,

  • Tickets redeemed by points,

  • Replacement tickets,

  • Arrival replacement tickets,

  • Substituting tickets,

  • Non-real-name tickets,

Free WiFi To All High-Speed Trains

The China Railway Corporation has been focusing on further improving its railway experience for the public lately, just this week it was announced that all high-speed trains would be getting free WiFi sometime in the near future.

Anyone who regularly uses China's ever-expanding high-speed rail network will be pleased to hear the government will be bringing free WiFi to all of its bullet trains in the country. China Railway Corporation's deputy general manager announced and confirmed the plan this week at the 19th PKU Guanghua New Year Forum.

When will it be implemented?

Currently free WiFi is only available on the new Fuxing trains from Shanghai to Beijing but the CRC will start adding the service to other routes eventually covering the whole network with free WiFi. The CRC have been testing WiFi in the trains since 2016, as many of the routes go through mountains and tunnels making it difficult to keep a stable internet connection.

No exact date was announced for the different high-speed rail routes but will most likely be rolled out sometime in the near future. Along with WiFi the network will also introduce a facial recognition check in system for passengers on high-speed trains at some major stations.
