Netflix Show on Delicious Chaoshan Food

Flavorful Origins, a Chinese-language food series, launched last month on Netflix, giving overseas viewers a glimpse into the mouthwateringly scrumptious world of Chaoshan cuisine. 

The series is broken up into 20 episodes, each running for around 12 minutes, and explores specific dishes and cooking techniques that can be found in the Chaoshan region of Guangdong province.

Most of the cooking performed in the show takes place in homes, at street side stands and in small, family-run restaurants. 

Although many of the foods featured in the series can also be found in other parts of China, the series goes to great lengths to emphasize the preparation methods unique to the area.

In comparison to other shows on the platform, Flavorful Origins focuses primarily on the food itself rather than the life of the chef, depicting farmers picking the ingredients out in the field, to the marinating process and finally hungry diners chowing down on the scrumptious dishes.

Cantonese cuisine is popular in the United States, but many viewers have never heard of the Chaoshan region. Viewers will also quickly realize that the food featured on the show is quite different to the "Cantonese" cuisine that they are accustomed to back home.

There are no interviews featured in the show, but the episodes are jam-packed full of close-ups of food and dishes, enabling viewers to binge, get hungry and hopefully book a trip to Chaoshan so that they can taste the delicious foods for themselves!
