What to do if your passport is lost in China?

置之不理肯定是不行的，因为根据中国法律，外国人在中国境内遗失护照后未及时补办护照和签证，将构成非法居留并被罚款，情节严重的还有可能会被限制出境。

It's definitely not possible to ignore it. According to Chinese law, foreigners who lose their passports in China and fail to get re-issued passports and visas in time, will result in illegal residence and face fines, and may not be able to leave the country in more serious cases.

到遗失地派出所报案，申请护照遗失并拿到派出所出具的《报案回执》。

Go to the police station where the loss occurred and report the case, obtain theReceipt for Reporting to the Police issued by the police station.

 如果你不知道护照是在哪里丢的，就带着你的身份证明/护照或签证的复印件去居住地的警察局报失。

If you do not know where your passport is lost, bring your ID/ copy of your passport or visa to the police station where you live to report the loss.

如果你是在出差或旅行中丢了护照，可以去酒店或公寓的派出所办理护照挂失。

If the passport is lost on a business trip or travel, you can go to the police station in the area where your hotel or apartment is located in to report the loss of your passport.

到当地公安机关出入境管理处申请办理《外国人护照遗失证明》。

Go to the Exit-Entry Administration of the local public security bureau to apply for the Certificate of Loss of Foreigner’s Passport.

申请时，你需要准备以下材料。

You need to prepare documents as follows when applying:

1️⃣ 完整填写的《外国人出入境证件挂失表》；

 Completed Report Loss Form for Foreigners' Entry and Exit Documents.

2️⃣ 二寸免冠彩色照片三张；

Three two-inch bareheaded color photos.

3️⃣ 遗失或被盗的护照、签证复印件（如有）；

Photocopies of lost or stolen passports and visas (if any).

4️⃣《报案回执》。

凭《外国人护照遗失证明》到你的国家驻华使领馆申请新护照。

Apply for a new passport with the Certificate of Loss of Foreigner’s Passport at the embassy or consulate of your country in China.

《外国人护照遗失证明》是在护照遗失期间保证外国人能够逗留在中国的法律证明，乘坐飞机、火车或入住酒店都是可以的。所以，在取得新护照之前一定要妥当保管。

The Certificate of Loss of Foreigner’s Passport is a legal proof of staying in China during the period of passport loss and can be used for travelling by plane or train, as well as checking in a hotel. Therefore, it needs to be properly kept before obtaining new passport.

拿到新护照后，再到公安机关出入境管理处办理相应签证。

After getting a new passport, go to the exit and entry department of the public security bureau to apply for the corresponding type of visa. 

申请时，你需要准备以下材料。

You need to prepare documents as follows when applying:

1️⃣ 完整填写的《外国人签证申请表》；

The completed Visa Application Form for Foreigners.

2️⃣ 签证相片回执（申请人需于其上签字）；

Receipt of visa digital photo collection, signed by the applicant.

3️⃣ 新护照原件或其他国际旅行证件；

Original new passport or other international travel documents.

4️⃣《外国人护照遗失证明》复印件及原件；

Photocopy and original of the Certificate of Loss of Foreigner’s Passport.

5️⃣ 申请补发原签证的，除上述材料外，还应提交相应类别签证的申请材料；

If applying for re-issuance of the original visa, in addition to the above-mentioned, the applicant should also submit other documents in accordance with the requirements for the corresponding type of visa.

6️⃣ 公安机关认为必要的其他材料。

Other documents deemed necessary by the public security department.

基本上，完成这四个步骤，你就可以凭新护照和新签证在中国正常生活啦～

Basically, after completing these four steps, you can live normally in China with your new passport and new visa~

但是！要注意，《外国人护照遗失证明》的有效期只有30天，也就是你必须要30天之内拿到新的签证，不然就会被认定为非法居留进行处罚!

But! It should be noted that the Certificate of Loss of Foreigner’s Passport is only valid for 30 days, that is to say, you must get a new visa within 30 days, otherwise you will be considered as illegal residence and be punished!
