Renminbi gets global currency basket upgrade

Since October 1, 2016, the renminbi has been officially included in the SDR basket, becoming the fifth currency in the SDR apart from US dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen and the British pound, as well as the first emerging market currency to be included in the SDR basket.

今年，国际货币基金组织根据2017-2021年全球贸易和金融市场的发展情况作出了上调人民币权重的决定，自8月1日起生效。

This year, the International Monetary Fund, or IMF, made its decision to increase the weighting of the renminbi based on the development of global trade and financial markets from 2017 to 2021, effective from August 1.

执董会一致决定，将人民币权重由10.92％上调至12.28％，将美元权重由41.73％上调至43.38％，同时将欧元、日元和英镑权重分别由30.93％、8.33％和8.09％下调至29.31％、7.59％和7.44％。权重调整之后，人民币在SDR占据份额仅次于美元与欧元，领先于日元和英镑。

The Executive Board unanimously agreed to increase the weighting of the renminbi from 10.92% to 12.28%, the weighting of the US dollar from 41.73% to 43.38%, and the weighting of the euro, yen and pound from 30.93%, 8.33% and 8.09% respectively to 29.31 %, 7.59% and 7.44%. After the adjustment, the share of the RMB in the SDR is third only to the dollar and the euro, and ahead of the yen and the pound.

这也说明人民币作为全球重要储备资产的地位将提高，并在国际金融治理体系中更大程度地发挥核心作用。权重增加也将有助于增加人民币计价资产的海外持有量，巩固国际市场对人民币的信心。

The enhanced standing of the renminbi as a key global reserve asset will further boost the Chinese currency's accelerated march toward playing a more central role in the international financial governance system. The increased weighting will also help increase overseas holdings of renminbi-denominated assets and strengthen international market confidence in the renminbi.

但也有专家指出，人民币要变成像美元和欧元一样盛行的国际货币，中国的金融市场还需要进一步改革开放。

Nevertheless, more reform and opening-up of China's financial markets are still necessary for the renminbi to become a well-acknowledged global currency like the US dollar and the euro, experts pointed out.

全球已有超过75个国家和地区的货币当局将人民币纳入官方外汇储备。截至2022年第一季度，人民币官方外汇储备占比提高到2.88%。

There are more than 75 countries and regions that have included renminbi in their official foreign exchange reserves. As of the first quarter of 2022, the proportion of RMB official foreign exchange reserves has increased to 2.88%.

环球银行间金融通信协会（SWIFT）最新发布的人民币月度报告和统计数据显示，6月，在基于金额统计的全球支付货币排名中，人民币保持全球第五大最活跃货币的排名，占比2.17%。与2022年5月相比，人民币支付金额总体增加了6.61%，同时所有货币支付金额总体增加了5.30%。

According to the latest monthly renminbi report and statistics released by SWIFT, in June, in the global payment currency ranking based on amount statistics, the renminbi remained the fifth most active currency in the world, accounting for 2.17%. Compared with May 2022, the overall RMB payment amount increased by 6.61%, while the overall amount of all currency payments increased by 5.30%.

这些种种，都反映了中国金融市场发展和开放取得的积极进展，也反映了国际社会对中国经济和金融市场发展的认可和信心，将有助于提升人民币资产对全球资金的吸引力。

These all reflect the positive progress made in the development and opening of China's financial market, as well as the recognition and confidence of the international community in China's economic and financial market development, which will help increase the attractiveness of RMB assets to global capital.
