On October 6, the workers of Transnet, a South African state-owned port and freight railway company, went on strike due to wage dispute. Later, Transnet announced that its operating ports were suspended due to force majeure, resulting in the stagnation of South Africa's main ports and railway cargo services. As a result, a large number of goods were stranded in the ports, and the export of mineral resources was restricted. The mining company lost up to 44 million dollars a day.

However, the situation is still getting worse. On last Thursday local time, the union workers rejected Transnet's revised proposal for salary increase and said they planned to continue the strike.

Transnet表示该公司已将工资报价从之前的3-4%提高到4.5%，并在未来两年内每年增加5.3%，今年的医疗保险津贴也将增加4.5%。但代表Transnet大多数工人的全国运输联盟（UNTU）和南非运输和联合工人联盟（SATAWU）拒绝了最新的提议。

Transnet said that the company has raised the salary quotation from 3-4% to 4.5%, and will increase 5.3% annually in the next two years. This year's medical insurance allowance will also increase by 4.5%. However, the National Transport Union (UNTU) and the South African Transport and United Workers Union (SATAWU), which represent the majority of Transnet workers, said no to the latest proposal.

UNTU总书记Cobus van Vuuren说明，工会要求工资增长与南非的年度通货膨胀率挂钩，8月份，南非的通货膨胀率达到了7.6%。Transnet表示，满足工会的要求是不可持续的，因为目前工资已经占该公司总支出的66%。

Cobus van Vuuren, general secretary of UNTU, said that the union required that the wage increase be linked to South Africa's annual inflation rate. In August, South Africa's inflation rate reached 7.6%. Transnet said it was not possible to meet the requirements of the trade union because wages now accounted for 66% of the company's total expenditure.

The South African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) said that the standoff between the trade union and Transnet is causing a devastating impact on the South African economy, which is more serious than the energy crisis. The economic losses caused by supply chain delays are about R100 million to R100 billion (about RMB39.4 billion) per day.

SAAFF also pointed out that "the impact of a one-day port strike will cost at least 10 days for recovery". The 17-day strike Transnet faced in 2010 took it about 7 months to recover to the same level before.
