Well, solutions differ case by case.
If your residence permit is still in validity, then your Chinese employer can apply for the extension of your work permit online.
If your residence permit has expired, then extension of work permit is not available. You need to prepare application documents again and apply for a new work permit and residence permit.
If your residence permit has expired but the work permit is still valid (for more than 3 months), you can apply for a work visa for entry, and then apply for a work-type residence permit with your valid work permit after entry.
