More than 560 dockworkers at Liverpool Port, one of the United Kingdom's busiest ports are to be on strike action from September 19th to October 3rd over a pay dispute, the United Kingdom's Unite union said on Friday, adding to a labor dispute this summer caused by soaring inflation.

The Port of Liverpool is the UK's second largest port after Felixstowe, which ended an eight-day strike last week with no agreement.

The secretary of Unite, Sharon Graham, said in a statement: "MDHC Container Services needs to reconsider, make a reasonable offer and deliver on its previous pay commitments."

United said the strike would severely disrupt shipping and road transport in and around Liverpool, England. The union also warned that more strikes would be scheduled in the coming weeks if no acceptable offers were made to workers.

Disputes have largely centered on the union demanding pay rises to keep up with Britain's current 12% inflation rate. While the port offered a 7%-9% pay rise, the Unite union said it is actually a "pay cut" with double-digit inflation.

They also said MDHC had failed to meet pay agreements reached in 2021, including failing to conduct its first pay review since 1995 and failing to improve its shift system.

However, Peel Ports, MDHC's parent company, said it offered a pay rise of 8.3% on top of last year's 4.5% and made improvement to shifts, sick pay and superannuation.

David Port, Chief Operating Officer, Port Peel Huck said. He added that the two sides would continue negotiations ahead of the strike date.

Steven Gerrard, chief officer at Unite Freeports, said in a statement: “The port operator has refused to deliver on the pay rise promised to our members and is now refusing to offer an acceptable rise. No one at the port can be responsible for the damage caused by the impending strike.” He called on the port operator to “fulfill the agreement reached in 2021 and make a 2022 pay offer acceptable to the members”.
