Shipping companies are struggling with costly aftereffects as consumer spending declining and supply chain congestion easing. Their revenue has dropped sharply while the cost of equipment storage has soared.

According to Drewry's latest report, the global amount of container increased by 2% to 50.9 million TEU last year. However, it is expected to shrink by 3% this year because shipping companies would urgently try to cancel leases on as many containers as possible and retire its own old ones.

John Fossey, a senior analyst of container equipment in Drewry, expected that thousands of leased containers would be returned to leasing companies this year, and some containers would be sold for storage and other purposes to the secondary market, therefore a large part of 5 million TEU idle containers would be in used by the end of the year.

Textainer, the second largest container equipment leasing company, also reported a sharp drop in demand in the third quarter of last year.

In addition, the container equipment manufacturing industry has almost come to a standstill. Drewry said that this year may be the "worst year on record", with an output expected to be less than 700000 TEU. In contrast, the output last year was 3.77 million TEU, a sharp drop of 47% from the record output in 2021.

Fossey said that after the Spring Festival holiday, some Chinese container manufacturers may not resume production until March at the earliest. At the same time, due to the excess of containers, the price of the new standard 40-foot-high container made in China has dropped from about $6500 at the peak of demand to less than $3000 now.

而二手集装箱的价格也大幅下跌，质量好的20英尺集装箱现在在北欧被广泛出售，价格在1000至1500美元之间。

And the price of second-hand containers has also dropped sharply. 20-foot containers with good quality are now widely sold in Northern Europe, with the price between 1000 and 1500 dollars.
