Planning to leave China? Don’t forget to claim your social insurance funds! Whether you’ve been working here for a few months or several years, your social insurance contributions can be partially refunded. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process smoothly.

Step 1

Notify Your Employer

The first step is to inform your employer of your resignation. Typically, you’ll need to submit a resignation letter 30 days before your planned departure date. Once your employer is notified, HR will begin the process of canceling your work permit and provide you with a release and cancellation letter.

Step 2

Settle Your Social Insurance Account

Next, ask HR to help close your social insurance account and apply for fund withdrawal. If HR can’t accompany you to the social insurance bureau, they should provide you with a USB drive containing your records and a list of required documents.

Step 3

Prepare Required Documents

Policies vary by city, but here’s what you’ll generally need (using Guangzhou as an example):

- Passport: Original and copies (personal information page and visa page).

- Residence Permit: Original and copy (if applicable).

- Social Insurance Card: Original and copy, plus payment records.

- Termination Letter: Issued by your employer, stating your last working day and reason for leaving (stamped and signed).

- Bank Account Details: Your Chinese bank account information (bank name, account holder name, and account number).

- Medical Insurance Card: Original and copy. If you don’t have one, submit a written statement.

(Tip: If your employer agrees, you can also have the funds deposited into their account and ask them to transfer the money abroad.  )

Step 4

Submit Your Application

Visit the social insurance bureau on your scheduled appointment day with all the required documents. Once your application is approved, you should receive your refund within two months.

Important Reminders

- Do not close your Chinese bank account or deactivate your Chinese phone number before receiving the funds. They are essential for identity verification and fund transfer.

- Policies may differ slightly depending on your city, so it’s always a good idea to check with your local social insurance bureau beforehand.
