Hey there, expat parents-to-be! 🎉
If you’re expecting a little one in China,
congratulations!
But before you get too caught up
in diaper changes and sleepless nights,
there are a few important legal steps
you’ll need to take to ensure
your newborn’s status in China
is all squared away.
Let’s break it down!
Step 1:
Within 3-5 days of your baby’s birth, the hospital will issue an official birth certificate (《出生医学证明》). This is the first crucial document—don’t leave the hospital without it!
Step 2:
Here’s where timing matters: Within 60 days of birth, you must:
✔ Report the birth to the local Public Security Bureau (PSB) Exit-Entry Administration
✔ Apply for your baby’s birth registration and residence permit
⚠️ Important Note: If your baby obtains a foreign passport within 60 days, you can skip the birth registration and directly apply for a visa/residence permit.
Step 3:
After completing the birth registration, you’ll need to apply for your baby’s appropriate visa within 120 days to ensure legal stay in China.
【Why You Shouldn’t Delay】
Missing the 60-day deadline for registration could lead to fines for the parents—definitely not the kind of baby surprise you want! Staying compliant keeps everything smooth and stress-free.
【Final Tips】
🔸Keep copies of all documents (hospital records, passports, etc.).
🔸Check with your local PSB for any additional regional requirements.
🔸If in doubt, consult an immigration expert or your embassy for guidance.
