Dreaming of working in China, but stuck on the visa application? Many foreigners face delays or rejections due to overlooked details. We've compiled the 10 most common mistakes to help you navigate the process smoothly and kickstart your career in China!
My degree is valid worldwide
and doesn't need verification
Wrong! Especially for overseas degrees, they often require authentication by the Chinese Ministry of Education's Center for Student Services and Development (CSSD). This is a fundamental first step.
Any work experience is fine,
relevance doesn't matter much
The immigration authorities strictly review whether your work history matches the job position. Detailed documents proving at least 2 years of relevant experience are crucial.
A Police Clearance Certificate
is ready to use once issued
This document not only needs to be obtained from your home country or country of long-term residence but also must be notarized and authenticated by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate (a two-step process). This takes time, so start early.
I can work on
other types of visas first
Only work visas may be used for lawful employment. Working with any other type of visa constitutes illegal employment.
I'm healthy,
and age is just a number
China typically imposes clear age restrictions on work visa applicants (generally between 18 and 60 years old; only Category A work permits have no age limit) and health requirements. Applicants must undergo a medical examination at a designated medical institution and obtain a “Physical Examination Record for Foreign Nationals.”
If a company hires me
they can sponsor my visa
The company must have the legal qualification to hire foreigners and must have successfully obtained the "Work Permit Notice" for you. Before accepting an offer, confirm the company has completed these prerequisites.
I can translate
the documents myself
All non-Chinese documents (like degrees and police certificates) must be translated by a certified translation company with an official seal. Self-translations are not accepted.
Once I enter with a Z-Visa,
I'm all set
After entering China with a Z-Visa, you MUST apply for a work-type residence permit at the local Exit-Entry Administration Bureau within 30 days. Failure to do so will result in illegal stay.
The visa can be
processed very quickly
The entire process—from document preparation, authentication, medical check, to final approval—can take 3 to 6 months. Plan well ahead and allow sufficient time.
The employment contract
just needs the basic details
The contract must comply with Chinese labor laws, clearly stating the position, salary, work location, and contract term. Vague contracts are a major red flag during review.
Applying for a Chinese work visa is a meticulous process. Understanding the policies and preparing compliant documents in advance is key to success.
