China Driver's License Application Guide
Whether you're a long-term resident or short-term visitor, as long as you hold a foreign driver's license, you can legally drive in China!
Below are the detailed procedures for obtaining a permanent driver's license and a temporary driver's license. Save this guide for future reference!
Permanent Driver's License
✅ Eligibility:
Foreigners aged 18-70 with a valid foreign driver's license
✅ Processing Time:
Same-day issuance!
✅ Requirements (meet one of the following):
1⃣ Hold a Chinese Permanent Residence ID Card → Apply at the local vehicle management office (VMO) of your residence
2⃣ Hold a residence permit (valid for ≥3 months) → Apply at the VMO where your residence permit was issued
3⃣ No residence permit but hold a valid visa/stay permit → Apply at the VMO where your temporary accommodation is registered
⚠ Exam Requirement:
Must pass the written test (available in English)
Temporary Driver's License

✅ Eligibility:
Short-term visitors who haven't obtained a permanent license
✅Processing Time:
Same-day issuance!
✅ Usage Rules:
Must be used alongside the original foreign driver's license + Chinese translation
✅ Validity Period:
Visa-free entry: Temporary license valid for 3 months (transit visas excluded)
Holders of visas ≥3 months: Temporary license valid for 1 year
🔄 Renewal:
Can be reapplied after expiration (same process as initial application)

A temporary license cannot be used alone—always carry your foreign license and its translation!
