5 Steps to Get a
Work Residence Permit in China
Many foreign friends want to work in China, but they are confused by the "legal residence" procedures. They don’t know what documents to prepare or the process, and even miss key steps, wasting time.
In fact, it’s not complicated to handle as long as you sort out the order and focus on the key points. Today we’ll break down 5 core steps. Pay special attention to the most important step – without it, everything will be for nothing!
Step 01
Notification of Foreigner's Work Permit

This is the key document for applying for a Z visa later. It must be applied for by your employer in China; you can’t apply alone.
How to do it:
First, your employer completes registration and verification on the "Foreigners Working in China Management Service System", and submits documents such as business license and legal person information;
Then they fill in the online application form for you, and upload related documents such as work experience certificate, highest academic certificate, and no-criminal-record certificate.
After approval, the system will generate a QR-coded Notification of Foreigner's Work Permit. Your employer will send it to you overseas, and then you can move to the next step.
Step 02
Apply for a Z Visa

After getting the Notification of Foreigner's Work Permit, you need to go back to your home country and apply for a Z visa at the local Chinese embassy or consulate. This is a special visa for working in China, and the only valid visa for legally entering China to work.
Things to note:
To apply for a Z visa, you need to bring your original passport, printed copy of the Notification of Foreigner's Work Permit, visa application form and recent passport photo. You can ask the local embassy or consulate for specific documents in advance;
A Z visa is usually for a single entry, with a validity period of about 3 months. You must enter China within the validity period, otherwise it will expire.
Step 03
Enter China and
Complete a Physical Examination

After entering China with a Z visa, there is another important step – physical examination. According to regulations, if you apply for a work-type residence permit with a validity period of more than 1 year, you must provide a valid health certificate.
Kind tips:
Some physical examination reports from overseas may not be accepted. It’s recommended to go to the local designated International Travel Healthcare Center for a re-examination as soon as possible after entry, and keep the result properly;
Within 24 hours after entry, you need to complete the Registration Form for Temporary Accommodation of Foreigners. This form is a necessary document for applying for a residence permit later.
Step 04
Get the Formal Foreigner's Work Permit

Attention! This step is the most important of the whole process. Without it, all subsequent steps can’t be carried out, and all your previous efforts will be wasted!
How to do it:
After passing the physical examination, your employer will take related documents (your Z visa page, entry stamp page, physical examination certificate, employment contract, etc.);
Go to the local relevant department (Bureau of Science and Technology/Foreign Experts Bureau) to exchange the Notification of Foreigner's Work Permit for the formal Foreigner's Work Permit.
Special reminder: The formal Foreigner's Work Permit is a necessary document for working legally in China and applying for a residence permit. You can’t do without it.
China implements a three-category (A, B, C) management system for foreigners working in China. The required documents and processes are different for each category. It’s recommended to confirm your category in advance.
Step 05
Apply for a Work Residence Permit

After getting the formal Foreigner's Work Permit, you can apply for a work residence permit. This is the final proof for foreign friends to legally live and work in China. Its validity period is usually the same as your employment contract, generally 1 to 5 years.
Required documents:
Original passport, formal Foreigner's Work Permit, physical examination certificate;
Registration Form for Temporary Accommodation of Foreigners, certificate letter issued by your employer;
Submit the application to the exit and entry administration of the public security organ in the place where you plan to live.
After approval, the public security organ will issue a work residence permit in your passport. Once you get it, you can work and live in China with peace of mind!
Important reminder:
If there is any change in the information of your work residence permit (such as change of employer or address), you need to apply for a change within 10 days. Before the residence permit expires, you need to apply for an extension 30-90 days in advance. Overstaying will result in a fine of 500 yuan per day, and those with serious circumstances may be deported.
