After Obtaining

a Work Visa,

What You Can

and Cannot Do?

- HACOS -

Foreword

Finally, that long-awaited Chinese work visa is in your hands! A brand-new career and life chapter is about to begin.

While it’s an exciting moment, understanding the rights and restrictions that come with the visa will help you start your journey in China more smoothly and with greater peace of mind.

🎉 Now you can:

1. Legally Reside Long-Term

Within 30 days of entering China with your work visa, you must apply for a work-type residence permit at the exit-entry administration of the public security authority in your intended place of residence.

This permit is typically valid for 6 months to 5 years, usually matching the term of your employment contract. It is the key document for your legal work and life in China.

2. Enjoy Social Insurance in China

According to Chinese law, your employer must enroll you in social insurance (covering pension, medical care, unemployment, work-related injury, and maternity). Once insured, you’ll have access to corresponding benefits like healthcare, adding security and peace of mind to your life here.

3. Obtain a Long-Term Chinese Driver’s License

If you hold a valid driving license from your home country, you can use your work-type residence permit to apply for a Chinese driving license without taking additional tests to obtain a temporary license, valid last for 3 months - 1 year. Or you can appy for a long-term driving license, valid last for 6 years. This makes getting around China much more convenient.

4. Reunite with Family in China

You may apply for family reunion visas(Q visa)/private affairs visas(S visa) for your spouse, parents, and minor children, allowing them to join you and live together in China—so you won’t have to be far from loved ones.

5. Travel Freely Within China

During the validity of your residence permit, you are free to travel around China (except in areas that are off-limits to foreigners). Use your holidays to explore the country’s beautiful landscapes and rich culture.

⚠️But please note:

1. Do Not Change Employers Arbitrarily

The employer stated on your work permit and work-type residence permit must be exactly the same as the company you actually work for. Working for Company B while holding a work permit issued for Company A is illegal and can lead to serious consequences.

2. Do Not Engage in Unapproved Work

It is strictly prohibited to take on any part-time jobs or other work outside the scope approved in your work permit. Your job content should match the position declared in your visa application.

3. Do Not Overstay

Be sure to renew your residence permit well before it expires. Overstaying is considered unlawful residence, which may result in penalties and affect future visa applications.

Epilogue

With careful planning, you can move forward steadily. We hope this guide helps you adapt to your new environment, seize opportunities fully, and live in compliance with the laws—so you can settle in with confidence.

If you have any questions regarding visa extensions, work permit renewals, etc., please feel free to contact us.

Wishing you a smooth, rewarding, and wonderful work and life experience in China!
