English poet John Donne, 17th century, famously wrote that “No man is an island,” comparing people to countries, and arguing for the basic human need of belonging to each other, in a community.

Like independent islands in an archipelago.

 "An archipelago is a chain, cluster or collection of islands. It may be found isolated in large amounts of water or neighboring a large land mass."

The Malay Archipelago, between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, is considered the largest one on planet Earth, counting more than 25,000 islands in Southeast Asia. At least some of these islands—and the straits that separate them—were part of mainland Asia, current China, during the last ice age.

The concept of group and division in Architecture

When we apply this to architecture, we can use this original meaning as a metaphor. In architecture, the archipelago concept according to the city planning, it suggests a fragmented condition. 

Which means that here are separated parts that are not totally disconnected, they are located in a common ground and the parts are self-sufficient. 

These fragmented parts are like the islands in the sea and their common ground is the sea itself.

When we talk about lighting design, we can relate the same concept. Independent suspensions can be collected, connected, associated into a cluster.

Our lighting master, Contardi, recently CCC certified (3C认证), embraced this amazing concept and designed several cluster collections.

Sailing the beautiful costs of Mediterranean Sea, Contardi, bring us to Balearic Archipelago, in Spain.

Particularly to Minorca and Maiorca islands.

In a nutshell: Maiorca is the largest of the four main islands, it has it all, from stunning natural beauty to thousands of years of history and buzzing nightspots. 

While, in Minorca, miles of picturesque coastline are mostly unspoiled, with white beaches, shallow turquoise seas, and idyllic sheltered coves. Also designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, its natural beauty is outstanding. 

Servomuto is a Milan based design studio. Servomuto combines historical and classic lamp shade forms with passion for Interior Design brought together designers Alessandro Poli and Francesca De Giorgi over a decade ago in 2007. Servomuto’s small production laboratory in the south of Italy has been producing lamp shades since the 1960’s. Now the studio mainly focus in designing them for lighting companies.

Archipelago collection is characterised by the shade made out of the fire-resistant Trevira CS fringes and the body in real polished brass, details that enrich the product. The light source is a customized dimmable LED board, which, in the table version, can be regulated through a three-phase dimmer switch positioned on the base.

Fringe first became a decorative fashion embellishment in the 1920s as part of the flapper look, a popular dress style for women. 

However, in fashion we could find several references to fringes, from Native American, to hippies in the 60s, to ancient Chinese headdress, Qing dynasty, for example.
