The Porticoes of Bologna

Bologna is a historic city with a long history. It is a medieval wonder that can be one of the most favoured tourist attractions. With the addition of its porticoes to the list of heritage sites, it has certainly made its way into the tourism map in a prominent manner.

A portico is basically a structure that is a roof with multiple columns at regular intervals. UNESCO has recognised the Porticoes of Bologna as an  "outstanding example of a building type, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape that illustrates one or more important phases in human history.” Bologna’s extensive porticoes, dating back to the 12th century and still very much part of the city’s everyday life, have been added to the World Heritage List.  At a meeting in China last month, the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, the U.N. culture agency, inscribed the porticoes on the prestigious list. The addition raised to 58 the number of Italian sites on the list, making Italy the number one in the world (with China following right after with 56).

The city's porticoes, almost 62 km long of which 40 km in the city centre, make the city of Bologna  truly unique and have become an expression and element of Bologna’s urban identity. Ever since 1100, when the growth of the University led to the need for new urban spaces, the porticoes have become private and public locations where people can socialise and trade, an open-air salon symbol of Bologna’s hospitality. The medieval porticoes are a cherished meeting place for Bologna’s residents, sheltering them from the sun and rain and serving as a crossroads of civic life.

Bologna is also home to one of the oldest universities in the world, Università di Bologna. Hence, you have all the more reasons to go there. Its old structures really paint a pretty picture, while there is that added advantage of boasting about the latest UNESCO World Heritage site. All in all, next time you’ll go to Italy you must include Bologna to your travel itinerary.

Bologna Academy of Fine Arts

The Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna is an institution of high artistic and cultural education of university rank, based in via delle Belle Arti 54. The Academy, one of the oldest in Italy and in the world, is a place of study, production and preservation of art, dedicated to the training of artists, designers and professionals in this field.

Placed in 1804 in the present site, the Academy was originally founded in 1710 as the Clementine Academy, from which it inherited and subsequently implemented the historical core of the sculptural heritage of chalk, paintings, drawings, prints and documents that it still preserves today. From the initial four classes of teaching (painting, sculpture, architecture and arts) the Academy has in recent years expanded its training offering disciplines close to contemporary arts, respecting always their tradition and maintaining the specificity of technical and theoretical knowledge.

Our Artists: Giulio, Zino & Alessandro

You may wonder why we decided to talk about  Bologna today and what could be the link among the three young artists Magnificat decided to represent  to bring Italian creativity to China. The answer is: Bologna itself. Giulio, Zino and Alessandro all studied and experienced the city of Bologna, taking the sights and flavours of the city as an inspiration for their works.

GIULIO CASSANELLI

Giulio Cassanelli, Bologna 1979. His love for the camera started when he was just a kid and lead him in a deep artistic research made by different working experiences. In 2005 he focuses on the concept of changeability of “beauty” and started to search subjects that could maintein small changes in a concept of “beauty continuous”. Keeping his focus on photography, he started to do a deeper research on different medium in order to develop a strong and consistent poetics. From 2008 his research process is focused on soap bubbles and scrap items in order to show the uniqueness that only time can give to things.

Action, gesture, matter: these are the key words of Giulio’s work. Action because all his works of art are performative; gesture because the masterpieces come from a real and active gesture from the artist; matter because the artist is always seeking for the changing of the matter.

ZINO

Zino, aka Luigi Franchi, class of 1973, is an artist who works on the concept of stratification and assembly, theme that symbolises the cultural context in which we live in now characterised by an hyper-exposure to media and by an overlapping of images, information and inputs.  Zino graduated from Bologna Academy of Fine Arts in the 90s and after graduating he moved to Rome where he began to work with some artists from the former factory Cerere and where his love for contemporary art was born. His artistic career officially kicked off in 2013, when in a short time  he succeeded to exhibit in several public institutions, galleries and art fairs.

His work features the continuous research for new formal solutions to deal with contemporary society. He used to experiment different languages to test the expressive potential at the basis of his work. Close to themes related to the world of contemporary society, from consumerism to globalization, from pop culture to young trends, his path is characterized by the use of different materials mostly belonging to non-artistic environments such as Lego bricks, PVC balls, 3D prints.

His last research roots down in the Tape-Art, which involves the use of different types and colours of tapes to make art. This new communicative mean finds the perfect balance between pop language and street art.

ALESSANDRO TURONI

Alessandro Turoni started his art education at Forlì College of Art, where he learned plastics and painting techniques. He then graduated from Bologna Academy of Fine Arts in scenic design for melodrama. From this experience, beside the manual abilities of theatrical processing, he also developed a design methodology. In 2013, following his passion for the arts and manual work, he produced his first animal sculpture, starting exhibiting his works in Forlì's galleries.

Bologna is waiting for you.
