元宵节与春节、中秋节等都是是中国传统节日，其文化内涵和社会价值远胜于其他节日，有着非同寻常的意义。春节从除夕关门守岁开始，到元宵节，是一个人们不断扩大活动范围、人际关系不断得到扩大的过程。
初一给家长拜年，初二回娘家拜年。以后逐步扩大拜年范围到一般亲戚朋友。
在这个时段，人们的活动范围局限在熟人之间。
初五是破五，农活可以开始干，商店可以开门了。这个时段，社会开始正常运作。
到了正月十五，全体社会成员不分男女老幼都加入到节日活动中。
所以，元宵节具有确认全体社会成员(包括彼此不认识的)相互关系的意义。
