Youth climate strikers: 'We are going to change the fate of humanity'

The students striking from schools around the world to demand action on climate change have issued an uncompromising open letter stating: “We are going to change the fate of humanity, whether you like it or not.”

来自世界各地学校的学生们要求采取行动应对气候变化，并发表了一封毫不妥协的公开信，称：“无论你喜不喜欢，我们都将改变人类的命运。”

The letter says: “United we will rise on 15 March and many times after until we see climate justice. We demand the world’s decision makers take responsibility and solve this crisis. You have failed us in the past. [But] the youth of this world has started to move and we will not rest again ... We are the voiceless future of humanity ... We will not accept a life in fear and devastation. We have the right to live our dreams and hopes.”

The letter was created collectively via a global coordination group numbering about 150 students, including the first youth climate striker, Sweden’s Greta Thunberg.

A 16-year-old school student, Greta Thunberg began a solo climate protest by striking from school in Sweden in August,2018. Every day for two weeks, Thunberg has been sitting quietly on the cobblestones outside parliament in central Stockholm, handing out leaflets that declare: “I am doing this because you adults are shitting on my future.”

“For 25 years countless people have come to the UN climate conferences begging our world leaders to stop emissions and clearly that has not worked as emissions are continuing to rise. So I will not beg the world leaders to care for our future,” she said. “I will instead let them know change is coming whether they like it or not.”

Now more than 20,000 students around the world have joined Greta Thunberg . The school strikes have spread to at least 270 towns and cities in countries across the world, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the US and Japan.Many people on Twitter on the 18th January attached the tag "Fridays ForFuture" to correspond to the protest.

The strikes have attracted some criticism.

A spokeswoman for the British government said that although it was important to involve young people in issues such as climate change, interruption of scheduled classes would do harm to students. The National Association of Head Teachers said they would not tolerate students skipping classes to participate in the campaign. "Nothing is more important than children's education." "Leaders of individual schools should consider the best way to  respond to any protests involving their students," the group said.

英国政府的发言人表示，虽然让年轻的一代参与气候变化等问题是非常重要的，但是课堂学习的中断会影响学生的学习进度。 全国校长协会表示，他们不会容许学生翘课去参加活动。 “没有什么比儿童的教育更重要了。” 该组织表示，“各个学校的领导者应该考虑采取最佳方式来应对任何涉及学生的抗议活动”。

However,　“For people under 18 in most countries, the only democratic right we have is to demonstrate. We don’t have representation,” said Jonas Kampus, a 17 year old student activist, from near Zurich, Switzerland. “To study for a future that will not exist, that does not make sense.”

The strikes have been supported by Christiana Figueres, the UN’s climate chief when the Paris deal to fight global warming was signed in 2015. She said: “It’s time to heed the deeply moving voice of youth. The Paris Agreement was a step in the right direction, but it’s timely implementation is key.”Michael Liebreich, a clean energy expert, said: “Anyone who thinks [the strikes] will fizzle out any time soon has forgotten what it is to be young.”

Whatever the final result of the student strike caused by the deterioration of global climate, the world has seen the courage and responsibility of young students.
