Starbucks will close 8,000 company-owned US cafes for the afternoon on May 29 so employees can undergo racial tolerance training in response to protests after the arrest of two black men waiting in a Philadelphia store.

two men were approached by the store manager and asked to leave after they requested the use of the toilet without making a purchase.

In response, the men told staff that they were waiting for a friend and refused to leave.

Video of the incident shows their business associate arrive as they are arrested. He is white.

Following the arrests, Starbucks' perception level dropped to its lowest levels since November 2015.

Starbucks is warned against treating Philadelphia as a one-off affair, and urged the company to investigate whether there were any warning signs.

The company's CEO Kevin Johnson has apologized for the incident and confirmed that the employee who called the police is no longer with the company.

"While this is not limited to Starbucks, we're committed to being a part of the solution," Johnson said. "Closing stores for training is just one step in a journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities."

Response to the announcement of the closures was mixed on social media. Some applauded Starbucks, while others felt that the move was an overreaction from a "liberal" company.

"Being an African American, we think this is an America thing, not a Starbucks thing. But for them to publicly say they're going to do diversity training is good. They addressed it, not wiping it under the rug." ( William, 38)

"Those two guys, first of all, should not have gone to Starbucks and then not patronised the place. I think there was no racial bias. A few months ago, I was trying to use the restroom, they asked me if I was gonna buy something. It's just their policy."  ( John, 60)

"Starbucks is so ubiquitous that they've almost become a public space, like they can afford to be open to non-patrons as well. What we're really talking about is how to share spaces."   (Kristina, 40)

John Gordon, a restaurant industry analyst , said: “You can’t have that many employees and not have something stupid happen. You can’t cover everything.”

Gordon called the decision to hold the May 29 training sessions“the most practical way to get word out to all employees”

He said the training should be aimed broadly to “make sure that you are respectful to everyone’s culture. First, just be good people.”

Even if the threatened boycott does not materialize, the 8,000 temporary store closures will almost certainly have an impact on sales.

In February 2008, Starbucks lost roughly $6 million for closing all 7,100 stores for three and a half hours to train employees as it struggled to repair its reputation and grow sales after a period of overexpansion.

Starbucks’ progressive policies have sparked a number of boycott threats from the right over the last few years.

In 2015, the chain received backlash after its "Race Together" campaign encouraged baristas to discuss issues of police brutality with customers — The campaign caught fire on social media and was condemned for being superficial and ill-conceived.

Starbucks has continued to champion progressive causes in the workplace. Last month, it claimed it had achieved 100% pay equity across gender and race for all its US employees.

It also touts the diversity of its workforce. It says minority Americans comprise more than 40% of the company’s US employees.

Communications experts said such policies meant Starbucks had to hold itself to high standards in all its stores.

“The more your brand is trying to connect emotionally to people, the more hurt people feel when these kinds of things happen,”said Jacinta Gauda, the head of a New York strategic communications firm.

Howard Schultz, executive chairman of Starbucks once said in an opening letter “Racial diversity is the story of America, our triumphs as well as our faults.”
