JAKARTA, Indonesia — A Lion Air passenger plane that took off Monday from Jakarta crashed into the sea shortly after takeoff with 189 people on board, all of whom are feared dead in Indonesia’s worst air disaster in recent years.

The aircraft’s pilot had asked to return to Jakarta’s airport shortly after takeoff, and his request was cleared by air traffic controllers. The plane then lost contact with controllers and plunged into the sea from 3,000 feet. Authorities quickly launched a search-and-rescue mission but later said they do not expect to find any survivors.

Fifteen ships are on the lookout, working around the clock to find the plane’s main section and the victims, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said at an evening news conference Monday at Jakarta’s airport. More than 300 rescuers have been deployed from the search-and-rescue agency, among them 30 divers who are plunging deep into the water to find the remaining parts of the fuselage and the bodies.

The air traffic websites FlightAware and Flightradar24 showed the plane climbing erratically, barely reaching above 5,000 feet, before quickly dropping and disappearing from radar.

In a news conference, Lion Air Group’s chief executive, Edward Sirait, said the plane, a new model from Boeing, had a technical issue on a previous flight that was resolved “according to procedure.” He did not give details.

By Monday afternoon, distraught family members had begun streaming into a crisis center set up in Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Another was established at the plane’s never-reached destination at the Depati Amir Airport in Pangkal Pinang, a tin-mining region.

Among them was Fitri Sagala, 47, whose brother-in-law, Mangatur Sihombing, boarded Flight 610 that morning. She was at the crisis center with her sister, Mangatur’s wife.

Jandri moved his flight to Monday morning from Sunday to spend an extra day in the city with his fiancee, who works in Jakarta. They were due to marry in May 2019.

By late Monday afternoon, rescuers had cleared debris from the water’s surface and begun diving into the sea, which has a depth of about 114 feet. Sonar scanners from naval ships have also been deployed to locate crucial wreckage, particularly the plane’s black box.

He has appointed his vice president to lead recovery efforts, and the government’s disaster management agency has deployed more than 6,000 people to the area, ushering in convoy after convoy of fuel, planes filled with clean water, instant noodles and basic medicine.

Across this region on Wednesday, sign after sign, some hung on fences and some held up by weary survivors, continue to beg for help: “We’re hungry,” “Don’t forget us,” “We are victims too.” Of those who have been officially confirmed dead, only about a third have received any kind of burial, some in mass graves high in the hills surrounding the city and a lucky few by family members who found them. Thousands more may be dead, buried in mud.

“We expect this data to continue to change,” Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster agency, said of the death toll. About 70,000 people were rendered homeless and are camping in makeshift shelters fashioned from tarps and bamboo poles.

Also Wednesday, a volcano erupted on Sulawesi island, site of the devastating earthquake and tsunami. Mount Soputan spewed a column of ash more than 19,700 feet into the sky, according to the Associated Press. No evacuations were immediately ordered then.

For now, though, medical centers like Undata hospital are messy and overwhelmed. The hospital’s entrance was littered with oxygen canisters and hypodermic needles, and patients lay on stretchers under the blazing sun, waiting for treatment.
