Japan's Princess Mako has married her college sweetheart Kei Komuro - thus losing her royal status.
近日，日本的真子公主与她大学时代的恋人小室圭结婚，并因此丧失了皇室身份。
Under Japanese law, female imperial family members forfeit their status upon marriage to a "commoner" although male members do not.
日本法律规定, 皇室女性成员如果与平民结婚，则会丧失皇室身份，而皇室男性成员则不被这项法律约束。
She also skipped the usual rites of a royal wedding and turned down a payment offered to royal females upon their departure from the family.
真子公主也没有举办皇室婚礼的常规仪式，并拒绝接收皇室为离开女性颁发的一笔1亿4千万日元（135万美元）的津贴。
She is the first female member of the royal family to decline both.

Princess Mako left her Tokyo residence at around 10:00 local time on Tuesday (01:00 GMT) to register her marriage, bowing several times to her parents, Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko. She also hugged her younger sister before she left.
真子公主在向其父母——文仁皇太子和纪子皇太子妃多次鞠躬后，于当地时间周二上午10点左右离开东京官邸出发登记结婚。她在离开前还拥抱了妹妹。
The couple are expected to move to the US - where Mr Komuro works as a lawyer - after marriage. The move has drawn inevitable comparisons with British royals Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, earning the newlyweds the nickname "Japan's Harry and Meghan".

Like Meghan, Mr Komuro has come under intense scrutiny since his relationship with Ms Mako was announced. He was most recently criticized for sporting a ponytail when he returned to Japan. Some tabloid newspapers and social media users felt his hairstyle - seen as unconventional in Japan - was unbecoming of someone set to marry a princess.

But the ponytail is not the main reason why their relationship has been met with controversy in the country. The real reason for the animosity towards Mr Komuro seems to be financial issues around his family.

In 2017, after he and Mako announced their engagement, tabloids reported a financial dispute between Komuro's mother and her former fiance, with the man claiming mother and son had failed to repay a debt of about $35,000.

At the same time, intense media coverage of his family and scrutiny of the couple’s relationship has taken its toll on Mako, which has caused the princess to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, the Imperial Household Agency (IHA) had earlier said.

In a press conference on October 26, Ms Mako said she apologised for any trouble brought to people by her marriage.

"I am very sorry for the inconvenience caused and I am grateful for those... who have continued to support me," she said, according to an NHK report. "For me, Kei is irreplaceable - marriage was a necessary choice for us."

Mr Komuro added that he loved Ms Mako and wanted to spend his life with her.

"I love Mako. We only get one life, and I want us to spend it with the one we love," said Mr Komuro according to an AFP report. "I feel very sad that Mako has been in a bad condition, mentally and physically, because of the false accusations."

Besides, royal women have been forced to strictly adhere to certain expectations - they must be supportive of their husbands, produce an heir, and be a guardian of Japan's traditions. If they fall short they are savagely criticized.
