NEWS

“It’s vital for all of us to show that this is not all about some expensive politically correct green act of ‘bunny-hugging’ or however you want to put it.”

“Nothing wrong with bunny-hugging but you know what I’m driving at.”

It was not entirely clear what he was driving at, and Thunberg – who rarely misses a chance to mock the world leaders who she has spent her childhood pushing to take bolder, more urgent steps against climate change – seized the moment.

The terms 'bunny-hugging' or 'bunny-hugger' are both regarded as derogatory phrases used to undermine environmental, climate change and animals rights activists.

Multiple attempts were made to destroy not only Carson's scientific credibility but also her personal reputation: she was a fanatic, she was a “bunny hugger”, she was a dangerous reactionary who would drag modern society backwards into a new Middle Ages filled with pests, vermin, crop destruction and lethal diseases.

—— Margaret Atwood, The Guardian (London), 8 Dec. 2012

Carson: Rachel Carson,

However, depending on which part of Canada you are in a 'bunny-hug' could mean a hoodie with a large pocket on the front of the garment which is popular with young people.

The 'bunny-hug' was also the name given to a dance in the USA that became popular in the 1940s.

Following the Climate Action Summit in December 2020, headlines focused on his insistence that climate change wasn’t just a concern for “tree-hugging, mung bean-munching eco-freaks”. A few months later, when he addressed the UN, he argued against those who “say this is all green stuff from a bunch of tree-hugging tofu munchers and not suited to…politics”.

A slang, sometimes derogatory, term for environmentalists

Tree hugger: An informal and derogatory way to call an environmentalist, especially one concerned with preserving forests.

Duck squeezer: A derogatory term for someone with strong concerns about the environment and conservation, especially rescuing oil-covered ducks.

Eagle freak: A derogatory term for someone with strong concerns about the environment and conservation, especially the preservation of eagles. A homophone(谐音词) of the term “eco freak”.

Eco freak: A derogatory term for someone with strong concerns about the environment and conservation.

He went onto explain that the UK’s carbon emissions are the lowest they’ve been since the 19th century.

Britain’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions fell by 8.9% in 2020, largely driven by a slump in economic activity due to measures to limit the spread of coronavirus, provisional government data showed on Thursday.

“It’s important the government does not celebrate this, instead it must ramp up action to genuinely slash emissions in a meaningful way from every sector of society,” Greenpeace UK’s policy director, Doug Parr said in a statement.

Ahead of the event, the UK government had already announced its plans to cut the nation’s carbon emissions by 78% compared to 1990 levels by 2035.
