Stepping through Bab-al-Yaman, the enormous gate allowing access into Yemen's old walled city of Sana'a, was like stepping through a portal into another world. Tall, skinny buildings were crammed into the narrow lanes. Yemen is scattered withsimilar soaring constructions, from those in smaller villages to bigger towns.

As I travelled around the country, marvelling at these skyscaper cities, I could not help but wonder why the Yemenis built these high-rises.

Salma Samar Damluji, architect and author of The Architecture of Yemen and its Reconstruction told me that any agriculturally viable space was deemed too valuable to build on, so that building upwards, in tightly formed clusters, was the preferred option. It was also the need for protection that made Yemen's settlements huddle together rather than sprawl across the land.

Constructed using natural materials, Yemeni high-rises are superbly sustainable and perfectly suited to the hot and dry Arabian desert climate, while also allowing light but not too much heat.“Living in an inhospitable desert, security and the ability to look out across the land for approaching enemies, together with the ability to lock the cities' gates at night, had to be considered in any town planning.”

It was simple curiosity that prompted retired Royal Navy diver Chris Murray a decade ago to plunge into the icy waters around a mysterious islet in a small loch in the Scottish Hebrides. But when the extraordinarily well-preserved pottery he found in the islet's silty surround was radiocarbon dated to 3600 BC, it pushed our awareness of civilization on the British Isles back to a time before both Stonehenge and the first pyramids in Egypt.

The piece of land poking out of the Hebridean loch is an example of a remarkable form of a man-made island known as a crannog, which were created via an inspiring blend of ingenuity and effort. The word crannog translates from Gaelic as "son of tree" or "young tree", referring to the fact that their foundations were built by driving long timber piles into the bed of a loch before filling in the interior with stones or other natural materials to create a solid foundation. People dwelled on these distinctive platforms for thousands of years— right up to the 17th Century.

What is certain, though, is that crannogs provide a unique window on human life all the way back to Neolithic times in Britain. That is because the silt-carpeted floors and still, icy waters of Scottish lochs preserve much that would be lost elsewhere. "The underwater environment of crannogs slows decay processes," said Andrian Barrie, a underwater archaeologist. "The preservation is so good that wooden tools are perfectly preserved. And it is not just artefacts. The great preservation of waterlogged materials include macro plant and pollen remains that give us details about diet, the environment and lifestyle."

Lebanon is using hiking to teach tourists about the country, and its people more about themselves. The country has been working to create a national hiking culture that unifies its diverse sects and spread it to the travelers.

The civil war left many hikers seeking the safety of experienced guides to help navigate the poorly marked trails and undetonated landmines that still litter the landscape. In the case of dangers and troubles, the Lebanon Mountain Trail has been built, which is a 470-km path spanning the country from north to south and connecting more than 75 ethnically diverse towns and villages. From the wild oak and pine forests to the lakes and vineyards to the monasteries and chapels set into the mountainsides, the route showcases the natural beauty and cultural wealth of Lebanon's mountains.

When asked why international hikers should explore Lebanon, Rafic Saliba, who first joined hiking excursions some 20 years agoticked off a long list: the varied terrain and flora in a small geographic area, the historical sites and the cuisine and hospitality of the Lebanese people, among other things. "Lebanon is a very nice destination for hiking, and this is my personal aim: to make it a worldwide destination," he said.

After being owned by the Clan Colquhoun since the 14th Century, Scotland's uninhabited "wallaby island" made headlines in July 2020 when it was put up for sale. It eventually sold in March 2021, but despite its new ownership and status as a private island, Scotland's wild camping access rights still apply.

It boasts the woods and wildlife an island owner would expect in the southern Highlands: ancient oak and birch, gnarled conifers, otters and the odd sighting of roe and sika deer. Ospreys occasionally nest there, too.

"I understand she(Colquhoun, the Countess of the 8th Earl of Arran) introduced wallabies to the island shortly after World War Two, having kept them at her home in England," Tobin said(the former executive director at Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park). "I believe there are around 50 to 60 still living on the island today. Inchconnachan is also home to the capercaillie, an endangered Scottish woodland grouse. It is disputed, but they seem happy cohabiting with the wallabies."

LIMA, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Rainbow colours are splashed across small houses in a once grey neighbourhood of Peru's capital city, creating the optical illusion of a giant mural across San Cristobal hill which can be seen from various vantage points across Lima.

The project in Lima's Leticia neighborhood started five months ago and is being headed by muralists Carla Magan and Daniel Manrique. The effort aims to improve the lives of those in the COVID-hit community and promoting tourism.

Bright paintings adorn many buildings in the neigbourhood and workers are busy daubing steps and stone walls in cheerful hues of yellow and orange. Sitting on San Cristobal hill, the artwork covers over 300,000 square meters (74 acres).
