The Alternative to Coffee

There’s a coffee substitute already out on the market: This Miracle Froth is called MUD/WTR. It was invented by a man named Shane Heath, who realized that his regular coffee habit was making him unhappy and set out to devise a low-caffeine alternative: a powdered hot drink made with cacao, salt (Himalayan, of course), cinnamon, turmeric, and lion’s mane. That last one is not literal mane of lion, but a mushroom within the “tooth fungus” family. The sales copy for MUD/WTR says the company added the “tooth mold” for your brain to inspire clarity, creativity, and mood.

Testers who participated in the tasting said that this kind of artificial "molecular coffee" without coffee beans retains the flavor of traditional coffee, but appropriately reduces the bitterness components in it, which seems to have a better taste.

Can the contents of your next meal really make a difference to climate change?

As the world's population rises, the impact of food on the climate is going up. But it is possible to slow these climate changes through the food we choose to eat.

Food production currently contributes more than one-quarter of all climate change-causing emissions, when you take into account all the steps it takes to get food from field to plate. This includes clearing land to make space for agriculture, making and applying fertilisers, rearing animals and processing, packing and transporting the end result to reach us, the consumers.

An 8oz steak produced in Europe causes 10kg CO2e, on average, whereas the total daily diet of an average global citizen causes about 6kg CO2e per day. Eating 8oz of beef every day is way over our budget. But a microwaved potato and beans leaves plenty of room for eating other food during the day, because it contributes less than 0.5kg CO2e. So focus on adding in lots of climate-friendly foods into your diet, such as vegetables and beans or lentils, which come with a load of health benefits too.

Many people are surprised to learn that home cooking can add a sizeable chunk to their food climate impacts. Research shows that roasting vegetables in the oven typically more than doubles their climate impacts. Putting the oven on for two hours contributes around 2kg CO2e. An oven-baked potato is far worse than a microwaved one as using the microwave for eight minutes contributes less than 0.1kg CO2e.

Many plant foods contribute to far fewer greenhouse gas emissions than animal products.
