Let’s start with the movie metric that never goes out of style: box office gross. Just as Spice Melange is the most valuable resource in the Imperium, ticket sales are Hollywood’s great equalizer.

Deadline Hollywood reported that a total box office gross of $300 million, the combined cost of production and marketing, "will make many happy from an image-standpoint, even if breakeven is far north of that."

Acoording to Mendelson,a box office pundit at Forbes, based off these early numbers, the film is tracking at between $360 million and $410 million worldwide by the end of its run.

This is not the first time Dune has been adapted for film.Shortly after publication in 1965, Dune was identified for potential film prospects.Producers and directors have been captivated by the “Dune” story for decades, but with many projects fizzling out.

Multiple attempts to make such a film have been made, and it was considered to be "unfilmable" owing to its breadth of content. But there are also some critics think that the new Dune may not be as faithful to Herbert’s vision as Lynch’s version, but it’s in its adaptations where the film shines brightest.

“Dune” is a movie that earns five stars for world-building and about two-and-a-half for storytelling. “Dune” is rich with “themes” and visual motifs, but it turns into a movie about  Paul piloting through sandstorms and hooking up with the rebels of the desert, who in this movie are a lot more noble than interesting.

The rest of Herbert’s novel chronicles the bloody fulfillment of Paul’s messianic destiny as his Bene Gesserit-honed mental powers grow and his bond with Chani and the rest of the Fremen deepens, pulling them into battle with not only the Harkonnens but also the yet-to-be-seen Emperor.

“God knows there’s a lot of story left to tell,” says Eric Roth, who co-wrote the “Dune” screenplay. “A lot of [the sequel] will be concerned with the Fremen and what their political strategies are.
