The court overturned Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey on Friday, effectively ending all federal protections on abortion. President Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Former President Obama and other Democrats heavily criticized the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, saying the court retracted a fundamental right and warning that Republicans may seek a nationwide abortion ban.
In the court's 6-3 majority opinion, written by Justice Samuel Alito, the court ruled that "The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives."
Joe Biden
"Now with Roe gone, let's be very clear: The health and life of women in this nation are now at risk," Biden said from the White House, adding that "it's a sad day for the court and for the country."
"The court has done what it has never done before: expressly take away a constitutional right that is so fundamental to so many Americans that had already been recognized."
"It was three justices named by one President Donald Trump who are the core of today's decision to upend the scales of justice and eliminate a fundamental right for women in this country."
"Make no mistake, this decision is a culmination of a deliberate effort over decades to offset balance of our law."
Donald Trump
Former President Donald Trump has celebrated today's ruling, telling Fox News the Supreme Court is "following the constitution".
"This brings everything back to the states where it has always belonged," he said.
Barack Obama
[Planned Parenthood], [United State of Women]等组织对此事进行回应。
"Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues—attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans."
"Across the country, states have already passed bills restricting choice. If you're looking for ways to respond, [Planned Parenthood], [United State of Women] and, many other groups have been sounding the alarm on this issue for years—and will continue to be on the front lines of this fight," he added.
Hillary Clinton
“Most Americans believe the decision to have a child is one of the most sacred decisions there is, and that such decisions should remain between patients and their doctors.”
“Today’s Supreme Court opinion will live in infamy as a step backward for women’s rights and human rights.”
Nancy Pelosi
"Because of Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, the Republican Party & their supermajority on the Supreme Court, American women today have less freedom than their mothers. Radical Republicans are now charging ahead with their crusade to criminalize health freedom."
"In Congress, Republicans are plotting a nationwide abortion ban. In the states, they want to arrest doctors offering reproductive care & women for terminating a pregnancy. GOP extremists are threatening to criminalize contraception, in-vitro fertilization & post-miscarriage care."
Chuck Schumer
"American women are having their rights taken by 5 unelected Justices on the extremist MAGA court," he added.
"These justices—appointed by Republicans and presiding without accountability—have stolen the fundamental right to abortion."
Bernie Sanders
Overturning Roe v. Wade and denying women the right to control their own bodies is an outrage and in defiance of what the American people want. Democrats must now end the filibuster in the Senate, codify Roe v. Wade, and once again make abortion legal and safe.
Taylor Swift
I’m absolutely terrified that this is where we are - that after so many decades of people fighting for women’s rights to their own bodies, today’s decision has stripped us of that.

"The idea that there we were, and now my daughter, who is on the cusp of womanhood, has fewer rights and that there's less access for people her age than there was back then, it's just makes me despair," she said, shaking her head. "I mean, it just, it doesn't feel like I'm passing the torch. It feels like somehow we failed, or we thought everything was OK and it just wasn't," said Lauren Cattaneo, who was there with her 17-year-old daughter.
Michelle Robinzine, a D.C. resident, said the decision makes her feel hopeless. "I think is ridiculous. I think there's no way that anyone should have to or be able to tell a woman if she is or is not having a baby," she said. "I think it's going to disproportionately affect women of color and women without means that we won't be able to travel somewhere else where abortion is legal. And I think it's a sad day for our country."
McFarland, who was heckled by a protester while speaking to NPR, said she was heartened to see advocacy on both sides of the issue. "It's an incredibly serious issue. Either you believe that we just stopped babies from being murdered in droves or you're believing that women are being enslaved," she said. "Both of these are incredibly serious issues, and if you're not showing up for either of those, I think you're just lazy."
Stephanie Gross,an anti-abortion rights activists, says, “We are celebrating hard. Because a lot of babies are gonna be saved."
Another pro-life activist, Talitha Muggeridge, says that abortion killed “so many” in her age-group and she is excited to be part of the first “Post-Roe” generation.
