Half one year after the launch of Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 14, demand remains hot for the Pro models but is cool for the regular models, analysts say. Still, strong sales of the pricier Pro models bode well for Apple's profit margins.

Why people prefer Pro models?

The iPhone 14 series went on sale on Sept. 16 after a week of preorders. The base-model iPhone 14 starts at $799. The iPhone 14 Pro starts at $999, and the Pro Max starts at $1,099. The regular iPhone 14 and Pro version have a 6.1-inch display while the Pro Max version has a 6.7-inch display. The Pro models have a speedier A16 processor, improved cameras, ProMotion 120Hz screen and Dynamic Island—iPhone’s new appearance along with new functions. That is to say, the pro models are too strong.

It seems that extra$200 is not a challenge for customers who pursuit advanced functions.

The paywalled report from DigiTimes claims that sales of the ‌iPhone 14‌ and ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus are considerably overshadowed by an "enthusiastic" response to the iPhone 14 Pro and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max.

Base models face challenge

JPMorgan is tracking iPhone 14 availability across key markets, including the U.S., China, Germany and the U.K. The U.S. accounts for about 35% of iPhone shipments. China makes up about 15%. Germany and the U.K. each account for about 5%. Research indicates that Apple expected to make approximately 90 million new iPhones overall in the second half of 2022, but this fell to 80 million units due to "sluggish demand."

The information mirrors multiple other reports that suggest the ‌iPhone 14‌ and ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus have not met Apple's sales expectations. Shortly after launch, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that demand for the two devices is "lackluster," with worse pre-order results than the third-generation iPhone SE and the ‌iPhone 13‌ mini. He went as far as to claim that "Apple's product segmentation strategy for standard models fails this year" and Apple is believed to have shelved plans to increase production of the two devices. Display analyst Ross Young says panel orders for the ‌‌iPhone 14‌‌ are down 38 percent versus the ‌‌iPhone 13‌‌ at the same time last year, while in the resale market, the ‌iPhone 14‌ and ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus are losing their value twice as fast as the ‌iPhone 13‌ mini and ‌iPhone 13‌ last year.

A business as usual

The real test will be how iPhone 14 sales stack up leading into 2023. Since the price of base models has dropped in the second half of 2022,if iPhone 14 sales still take a slight dip this January and February, then sure, it might be cause for concern. However, it’s far too early to say that sales are a disappointment.

Further, the iPhone 14 Pro Max reportedly accounts for 60% of all iPhone 14 Pro orders. Pro Max is the most expensive one among the series.
