连以人名命名鸟类都不允许，
这样的“政治正确”是否矫枉过正？

多年来，北美众多鸟类的命名与种族主义、殖民主义、厌女色彩关系密切，引发的争议不断。
为改革该命名习惯，美国鸟类学会*近日决定，取消所有以人名命名的鸟类名称，取而代之的是通过鸟类的习性、栖息地与特点等为其命名。明年，将有近80种鸟类被重新命名。

This isn’t the first effort in renaming; in 2020, the society changed the name of a bird that once referred to a Confederate army general, John P McCown, to the thick-billed longspur.
这并非该组织首次尝试为鸟类重命名，早在2020年，为了断开鸟类名称与种族主义和奴隶制历史的联系，学会就将一种以联盟军*将军约翰·P·麦考恩命名的鸟更名为厚嘴长刺鸟。

"Exclusionary naming conventions developed in the 1800s, clouded by racism and misogyny, don't work for us today, and the time has come for us to transform this process and redirect the focus to the birds, where it belongs," the society's CEO, Judith Scarl, said in a statement.

For example, birds that will be renamed include Wilson's warbler and Wilson's snipe, both named after 19th Century naturalist Alexander Wilson. The Audubon’s shearwater, a bird found off the coast of the southeastern United States, will no longer have a name acknowledging John James Audubon, a famous bird illustrator and a slave owner who adamantly opposed abolition.
例如威尔逊莺和威尔逊鹬，就属于上文提到的以人名命名的鸟类。这两种鸟原本都是以19世纪博物学家亚历山大·威尔逊的名字命名的。而现在，依据鸟类命名规则中的外观或栖息地特征，“威尔逊莺”因为头上有一片独特的黑色羽毛，可能会被更名为“黑冠莺”。而原产于美国东南部海岸的奥杜邦海鸥也将改去名字，不再用来纪念约翰·詹姆斯·奥杜邦——他是著名的鸟类插画家，同时也是坚决反对废除奴隶制的奴隶主。

The society says that in addition to decoupling birds from racist or inflammatory names, it also makes sense to help people understand the species: names that describe the bird, its habitat, its range, or something else about the species convey more information about the bird than a person’s name.
学会表示，除了使鸟类名称不再涉及种族主义或煽动性话题之外，这次改名更有意义的一点，在于能帮助人们了解鸟类：如果鸟名能描述鸟类的特点、栖息地、生活范围或其他相关物种，无疑比那些空洞的人名传达的信息更多。

"The name has come to represent so much more than the work of one person, but a broader love of birds and nature, and a non-partisan approach to conservation," Susan Bell, who is on the society's board, said.
