Artwork made from collected human hair has gone on display at a Nottingham gallery.

Fine Art undergraduate at Nottingham Trent University, Jessica Lewis, collected hair from her friends and salons to create three installations of different tresses.

Ms Lewis, 21, had been living in a house with three other girls where she said hair was "everywhere".

But she found beauty in it and made it the centre of her exhibition.

The Centraal Museum presents HAAR!, a daring exhibition in which human hair as a material takes center stage. Hair can be made into beautiful hairstyles, but hair is also a great material for clothing, furniture and even embroidery. Virtually everything you see in the exhibition is made of human hair.

The hair Ms Lewis collected included all types - some of which she washed and dried and some which she left unwashed and in clumps.

Despite some finding the idea "eerie and disturbing" - including some of Ms Lewis's friends, who she said had not entered the display, she said: "There's a great sense of community because everyone feels like they're involved; it's their hair. There's a lot of feelings people have with their hair.

Never before has large-scale attention and research been conducted into the use of hair in fashion and visual art. Because it is a theme that is – literally – so close to the skin of people. The Centraal Museum is therefore presenting a major fashion exhibition about this phenomenon for the first time. The focus is mainly on hair as a statement, as an expression of identity. Male strength, female seduction.

Interestingly, the symbolism of hair–for all genders–dates back millennia.

Pterelaus, the King of Taphos in Greek mythology, was granted golden hair that made him immortal and unconquerable–so long as the hair grew on his head. Siddhartha Gautama (better known as the Buddha) cut off his long hair when he decided to renounce secular life and achieve enlightenment. Devout Amish men grow ZZ Top-esque beards once they get married, mirroring the mention of beards in the Bible.

In the Rastafari religion, dreadlocks are meant to resemble the mane of a lion, the powerful animal representing former emperor Haile Selassie (whom Rastafarians worship as the Messiah). And in the Himba tribe of Namibia, lustrous hair and thick braids are seen as a woman’s ability to bear healthy children.

Yet hair — and what we think it says about ourselves and others — turns out to be one of the interesting subjects in the world. An exhibition about hair is also an exhibition about self-presentation and self-perception, difference and hierarchy, race, religion, control, disgust, childhood, adulthood, masculinity and femininity.
头发描述了我们跟其他人的区别，是世界上有趣的主题之一；一场关于头发的展览，也是一个关于自我表现和自我感知、差异和等级制度、种族、宗教、控制、厌恶、童年、成年、男子气概和女性气质的展览。
