放眼好莱坞 到处是爱尔兰老公？
基里安·墨菲终于爆红了。在《奥本海默》之前，这位刚刚加冕的奥斯卡影帝一直在诺兰的影片中担当各种角色，其中最引人注目的是BBC2剧集《浴血黑帮（Peaky Blinders）》中的汤米·谢尔比，逐渐积累了不少粉丝。
最近你也可能在网上经常看到在《神探夏洛克》里饰演莫里亚蒂的安德鲁·斯科特（Andrew Scott）和《晒后假日》的主演保罗·麦斯卡（Paul Mescal）的资讯。

However, this new male-driven phenomenon likely stems from the convergence of the two online trends: an overwhelming fan appetite for male celebrities in the “internet boyfriend” era, and a growing interest in Irish culture. The result is a super-online (and horny) generation of Hibernophiles.
这种爱尔兰男性一统天下的现象，很可能是基于两个原因：一是社交媒体进入了“互联网老公”时代，粉丝对帅哥们热情满溢；二是人们对爱尔兰文化日益增长的兴趣。这两个趋势结合在一起，造就了一代活跃于网络、超爱爱尔兰帅哥的“爱尔兰控”。

That newfound perception of Irish men as harmless and gentle feels connected to a wider trend that they’ve shown up in on the internet: the “babygirl.” The moniker has become a go-to term of endearment for grown men in Hollywood who are physically attractive and display pleasant traits. According to Mashable, it describes “when a man is being cute, comfortable in his masculinity, or weak in an evocative way.”
公众对爱尔兰男人无害和温柔的新看法，与互联网上出现的一种更广泛的趋势有关：“宝宝（babygirl）”。这个称谓已成为粉丝对长相迷人、性格讨喜的好莱坞男明星的一种爱称。

爱尔兰人如何褪去刻板印象？
Presumably, there’s a link between the idyllic postcard image many Americans have of Ireland — lush green pastures, poetry, music, and a friendly population — and the view of Irish men as ideal romantic partners. It has certainly helped that Americans and consumers worldwide have been inundated with images of handsome Irish men in popular culture, from former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan to One Direction member Niall Horan to scruffy sex symbol Colin Farrell.

But Mary M. Burke, a professor of English at the University of Connecticut and the author of Race, Politics, and Irish America, says the perception of Irish masculinity in America wasn’t always so dreamy. In fact, she says that at one point, Irish men represented “the very opposite of what was deemed desirable in ‘respectable’ white America.”

The 1845 Irish famine meant a huge influx of immigrants to the US, and the men quickly gained a reputation as “feckless, uncultured, and prone to drunkenness and violence,” Burke explained.

“In some ways, the notion of the attractiveness of Irish men in today’s America is a corrective to the old stereotype of the Irish male immigrant,” she said.

Likewise, Burke says white Irish people fit into a category of “non-vanilla vanilla” in the Western imagination.

In a larger sense, for millennials and Gen Z audiences, Ireland’s politics seem refreshingly unproblematic.

“Ireland stands for nothing on the world stage,” Barton said. “We’re not an aggressor. We’re not a colonizer. The Troubles are over. We actually live in one of a few countries with a fairly stable democracy. We don’t have crazy leaders. It’s a benign kind of identity, Irishness.”

In other words, the Irish have all the charm Americans find in a British accent, maybe more—Barton cited a certain richness to “Hiberno-English”—with none of the baggage of the Brits.

“They have a great sense of irony,” he said. “I mean, they were an English colony for 750 years. I think that would certainly give anyone a bit of cynicism. There’s a great deal of value placed on wit and on repartee and being able to think on your feet, to think quickly and to deal with ambiguity.”
