The celebration lasts for more than a month,where people dress themselves and parade them , rolling as early as three weeks before the final – and most famous – parades on "Fat Tuesday". These often include celebrity guests, massive floats and the iconic and ubiquitous plastic beads thrown by the handful into the crowds.

After the parades, rubbish can be knee-deep in the streets, and beads and streamers hang from trees like the Spanish moss native to the area.
游行过后，街道上的垃圾堆积得能没过膝盖，珠子和彩带像当地的松萝凤梨一样挂在树上。
成吨的塑料珠子被遗弃在街道上，堵塞了雨水管道，污染了当地的河流以及墨西哥湾。
据新奥尔良环保部门统计，当地狂欢节活动每年都会产生大概1000吨垃圾。新奥尔良城市的部分地区低于海平面，极其依赖下水道排水系统防止城市被淹没。但在2018年，9.3万磅的塑料珠子堵塞在城市的下水道之中，这严重威胁了城市的安全。
从2018年9月开始，工作人员沿着圣查尔斯大道市中心每年游行路线的五个街区清洁，发现了15000个被堵塞的集水池，并收集了9.5万磅塑料珠子。
《皮卡优恩时报》（The Times-Picayune）报道，其实狂欢节游行一共产生了720万磅垃圾，这些珠子只是九牛一毛，因为珠子堵塞而导致的树叶和泥浆和淤泥也需要清理。
新奥尔良共有6.8万个集水池，但政府耗时近4个月，使用了近24辆真空吸尘车，仅仅清理完了1/4。
该市公共工程临时主管达妮·加洛韦表示：“这是一个惊人的数字，所以我们必须改善管理。”

2020年，密歇根的环保组织Ecology Center的研究报告发现：狂欢节的塑料珠子有毒，含有高浓度的砷、氯和铅。有害物质主要来自于电子垃圾。
美国的电子垃圾多出口到海外，得到电子垃圾的国家往往会把其中能用的原料二次生产出售。如手机塑料外壳下的组件中含有铅等重金属，那些国家往往会把塑料外壳拆除下来，制作成新塑料制品，有害金属物质也随之转移到新的塑料产品中。有害物质随着塑料珠子被送往世界各地，而新奥尔良刚好是它最主要的目的地之一。
Ecology Center在最新检测中发现在样本中，70%的塑料珠子存在溴化阻燃剂，64%的珠子含三氧化二锑，这会干扰人们的内分泌，甚至引发癌症。
众所周知铅是一种已知的神经毒素，检测发现33%的样本的铅含量高于美国儿童产品允许的铅含量上限。
相关人员已经发现在游行路线周围地区的铅含量升高，这严重威胁新奥尔良人们的生存——因为那些珠子最终会流入密西西比河，即新奥尔良人唯一的饮用水源将会受到污染。
For Suzannah Powell, who serves as a sustainability advisor to the Krewe of Freret,explainesd,"We [still] have those plastic cups, which are everywhere. I'm a member of the plastic pollution coalition and in our ideal world, those things aren't even present. However, I actually advised that we should keep those as an offering because they're culturally such a huge thing."

New Orleans' recycling heroes are not just fictional characters created for carnival. The Recycle Dat Initiative are working to help Mardi Gras, and the city of New Orleans, maintain both its traditions and the environment for years to come.

路易斯安娜州立大学的一个研究团队研发出了能从根源上解决塑料污染的方案——PlantMe Beads。PlantMe Beads是3D 打印机用生物基塑料制作成的塑料珠子，珠子内部放置植物种子，当珠子被扔到地上，塑料外壳会在细菌的帮助下降解，植物种子也会随之发芽，生长为环境卫士。
Hebert Weiner环境基金会的主席斯蒂芬妮娅·科米尔（Stephania Cormier）说：“我们的目标是能大规模生产PlantMe Beads，为2026年的狂欢节提供珠子。我们已经和新奥尔良负责花车游行的Krewe of Freret组织进行了洽谈，他们将从2025年开始停止扔普通的塑料珠子。我们期待PlantMe Beads能够让民众通过扔PlantMe Beads来迎接更加绿色可持续的狂欢节传统。”
And non-bead throws like food are making a comeback as the non-profit, Grounds Krewe offers a catalog of "throws worth catching" , such as small jute bags of red beans, jambalaya rice mix, and coffee. Other items in the catalog include recycled paper pencils, bamboo toothbrushes, necklaces made from seeds or bamboo, and small herb growing kits.

For those still interested in throwing necklaces, Atlas Beads offers handmade creations by a women's collective in Uganda; their beautiful beaded necklaces, bracelets and earrings, lovingly spun from discarded magazine paper, are much more likely to be prized by parade-goers than left behind as rubbish.
