什么是斯克里普斯全国拼字大赛？

1925年，由《肯塔基信使日报》组织创办，旨在将各地的拼字比赛统一起来，形成全国性赛事。那一年只有 9 名参与者。获胜者是 11 岁的 Frank Neuhauser，他在最后一轮比赛中正确拼写了 gladiolus（鸢尾花科的一种花的名字）而获胜。1941年，斯克里普斯公司收购了该比赛的经营权，赛事名称也逐渐演变为斯克里普斯全国拼字大赛。除了二战期间的1943年至1945年以及2020年因新冠疫情取消外，该比赛每年都会举办。

1925年的九名参赛者

比赛通常于每年5月阵亡将士纪念日长周末后的一周举行，1996至2010年在华盛顿特区的华盛顿君悦酒店举办，2011年起至今则选址马里兰州国家海港的盖洛德度假村和会议中心酒店。

该比赛面向美国及其他国家的学生。在美国，参赛者需是当地赞助地区拼字比赛的获胜者，其他国家参赛者也需为所在地区拼字比赛冠军。此外，参赛者需满足：在比赛前一年8月31日年龄不超过14岁，当年比赛2月1日不超过八年级，且此前未获过全国拼字大赛冠军。

参赛者通过多轮拼写对决竞争，每轮需正确拼出指定单词，拼错即淘汰，最后留存的选手为冠军。若出现平局，则进入“拼写对决（spell-off)”环节决胜负,选手需要在规定时间内尽可能多地正确拼写出单词。例如2024年，12岁的布鲁哈特·索马（Bhargav Somaraju）。在该环节中以90秒拼出29个单词的纪录夺冠。

比赛词汇源自《韦氏大辞典》等权威词典，由词汇专家精心筛选。随着轮次推进，词汇难度逐步提升，涵盖古英语、阿拉伯语借词、现代科技术语等多元来源。

冠军奖励十分丰厚，可获得5万美元奖金、斯克里普斯公司奖杯、2500美元储蓄债券、韦氏词典参考图书馆，以及大英百科全书在线高级版终身会员资格等。
