With an animation blizzard blown straight in from the pages of comics, “Into the Spider-Verse” took a supercollider to all the conventions of the superhero movie. Solemnity was out. Gone, too, was the idea of a chosen one. Spider-Man could be anyone, including a graffiti-tagging kid from Brooklyn, including a pig named Spider-Ham. The possibilities of the comic book movie were suddenly limitless.

After its Palme d’Or in Cannes this year, the film has gone from strength to strength, finding an audience and increasingly filling up its award shelf. Indeed, Anatomy of a Fall has steadily been emerging as an awards favourite.

The true brilliance, though, is what Nolan does in the film’s back half, after the Trinity Test comes to its white-hot conclusion.

“A Thousand and One” is a fascinating portrait of the maternal, feminine instinct caught in an unforgiving world.

The movie’s fundamental concept is that, under such pressures as its characters confront, there’s no such thing as ordinary life—or, rather, that creating and sustaining ordinary life requires heroism of a sort that goes all too often unrecognized, and that, here, takes its place in history. 

亚历山大·佩恩(Alexander Payne)的《留校联盟》(The Holdovers)是一部传神、怀旧又很有趣的作品，故事背景是 1970 年的一所新英格兰寄宿学校，讲述了三个同样孤独，却身份各异的灵魂在圣诞节假期相聚在一起的故事，广受观众追捧。

The holiday movie genre is suspect — even the most well-intentioned entries can be too saccharine, too wistful, too “Lifetime.”* But Payne, working with a sharp script written by David Hemingston, keeps “The Holdovers” grounded and real. Even absent your own memories of smoking indoors or handsewn outerwear, this is the kind of thoughtful, precisely constructed movie where you can almost taste the cigarette smoke and feel your fingers numbing through drafty wool mittens.

The idea of found family is a little too neat and cliche for “The Holdovers,” but perhaps more resonant and believable are the hard, and sometimes comically, learned lessons about how to be a decent person in the world — how to look outside of your own problems to empathize with and maybe even help others. No one comes out of this fixed or healed; It’s just a bit of life mixed up in the surreal pressure cooker of the holidays.

Yorgos Lanthimos crafts a deranged, provocative, unabashedly stylish and funny fairy tale that feels completely fresh. The themes aren’t exactly subtle, what with Emma Stone’s insatiable Bella Baxter calling her creator (Willem Dafoe) God, but it is one of those huge, ambitious swings that works.

The fact that this epilogue comes after, oh, 200 minutes of expertly sustained tension is just another sign that in the latter years of his career, Scorsese is upping the ante — in terms of scale, but also ambition.
