Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Wednesday evening that the Trump administration would work to "aggressively revoke" visas of Chinese students, including those with ties to the Chinese Communist Party or who are studying in "critical fields." He added that the State Department was revising visa criteria to "enhance scrutiny" of all future applications from China, including Hong Kong.
美国国务卿马可·鲁比奥在当地时间5月28日下午宣布，特朗普政府将开始“强硬吊销”中国学生的签证，重点包括与中国有联系或就读于“关键领域”的学生。美国政府还将修订签证标准，加强对来自中国大陆和香港地区的所有签证申请的审查。
Rubio's statement on Wednesday did not specify what are the "critical fields," but there has been long-standing concern in Washington about Chinese academics accessing sensitive and military-applicable American technology.
尽管鲁比奥未明确指出“关键领域”是哪些领域，但华盛顿长期以来对中国学者可能获取“敏感的、军事领域的美国技术”心怀警惕。

对此，我国外交部发言人毛宁5月29日在例行记者会上回应：美方以意识形态和国家安全为借口，无理取消中国留学生签证，严重损害中国留学生的合法权益，干扰两国正常人文交流。中方对此坚决反对，已向美方提出交涉。美方这一政治性、歧视性做法戳穿了美国一贯标榜的所谓“自由开放”谎言，只会进一步损害美国的自身国际形象和国家信誉。
Young Chinese people have long been crucial to US universities, which rely on international students paying full tuition.
长期以来，中国学生对依赖国际学生全额学费的美国大学而言至关重要。《纽约时报》报道称，此举势必引发大量不满，也将加深美国大学财务困境。
美国国务院协同国际教育研究所的一份报告显示，2023-2024学年，中国向美国输送了超过27万名留学生。美国高等教育机构就读的印度和中国学生数量在过去20年间持续增长，目前共占国际学生总数的54%。

密歇根大学统计学专业的中国学生Candy表示，担心自己的签证会在毕业前被取消。
"Ending up with only a high school diploma is something I dread," she said from China, where she's visiting family. "I pray to make it through my undergraduate study safely and smoothly. When I first heard the news, I wanted to curse Trump."
Candy说：“我祈祷自己能顺利完成本科学业。我很害怕最后只拿到高中文凭。第一次听到这个消息时，我真想诅咒特朗普。”
"Broad revocations and blanket bans would not only jeopardize the rights and livelihoods of Chinese students studying and working in the U.S., but also risk undermining America's long-standing position as the global leader in scientific innovation," she said.
曾赴美留学、现在美工作的人权研究员王亚秋（Yaqiu Wang）称，“大范围的撤销和全面的禁令不仅会危及在美学习、工作的中国学生的权利和生计，还有可能破坏美国长期以来作为全球科学创新领导者的地位。”
在X、Facebook等海外社交平台，此举同样“一石激起千层浪”。
不少美国网友留言表示反对，认为美国会因此丧失大量优秀人才。

President Donald Trump's administration has ordered its missions abroad to stop scheduling new appointments for student and exchange visitor visa applicants as the State Department prepares to expand social media vetting of foreign students, according to an internal cable seen by Reuters on Tuesday.

Mr. Trump said on Wednesday that Harvard University should have a cap on the number of international students it admits to create more spots for Americans. About one-quarter of Harvard’s student body is from abroad. Mr. Trump suggested that the figure should be no more than 15 percent.
