Social media users, if they don’t know the word, will viscerally understand the concept, the way trolls and extremists and bullshitters and the criminally vacuous have overtaken the platforms.

Doctorow said one of the reasons the word caught on was that it’s a bit naughty. "Somehow, giving people a minor license to be a bit rude is a magic key that opens the door to a longer, more thoughtful conversation." he said.

According to Doctorow, there are three stages in the process of enshittification. First, platforms are accommodating to their users. Then, they abuse them to benefit their business customers. In the final stage, they abuse what is remaining – their business clients – to gain profit only for themselves.
