Topic 1. Hangzhou DAC Biotech Company WebsiteDesign
The goal of this project to is to re-conceptualizeand redesign the English website for the international biotech company HangzhouDAC Biotech, a third-time IQP sponsor. Currently, the website is basic. Becausethe sponsor is preparing to begin clinical trials in the US, it needs for itsEnglish website to have a richer and more engaging presence. Students will beexpected to research other biotechnology companies’ web presences to identifyeffective practices, consider potential audiences, and methods of contentdelivery. The end product should be attractive, easy to navigate, rich incontent, and easily editable by the sponsor after students leave. The sponsorenvisions a multi-media approach to be incorporated into website design. Aninterest in biotechnology or web design a plus.
Topic 2. Raising Quality of Life throughUrban Cultural Facilities in the US and Hangzhou
As China has modernized, it has successfully metthe challenges of feeding and employing its people. Now, city governments areinterested in raising the quality of their residents’ lives to a higher level. The sponsor is involved in ongoing research to assist the municipality ofHangzhou in this endeavor. In this project, students will analyze the culturalinfrastructure of a US city (sponsor has suggested Worcester) to assess itscultural infrastructure and the demands of its residents for various offerings(museums, parks, theaters, movie complexes, sports facilities, etc.) Uponarrival in Hangzhou, the team will work with students in HDU’s SociologyDepartment who will have been assessing the cultural infrastructure of theChinese city Chongqing. The two groups of students will then assess the city ofHangzhou and make recommendations for the city in light of their comparative findings.
This sponsoralso worked with a team in 2017. (已有志愿者)
Topic 3:Assessment of Smart City Development in China and the US: from the perspectiveof government, corporations and the public
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology isa remote automatic identification technology, which enables target recognitionand relevant data acquisition through radio frequency signals. It is widelyused in our everyday life, for example, in parking management systems. ParkingManagement Systems (PMSs) are widely deployed at present. The majority of PMSsuse RFID tags as the counting and timing basis of entity control. This meansthat current RFID application systems are mostly used as a toll timing tool butis not identifying specific physical vehicles nor do they count numbers ofvehicles. Because recently, the number of vehicles in Hangzhou and otherChinese cities has increased dramatically, the current parking managementsystems are unwieldy for both managers and customers. In this project, studentswill assess RFID technology capabilities to work towards proposing anRFID-based intelligent parking management system that realizes automaticvehicle identification and information management, improves traffic efficiency, the safety of vehicles and improves vehicle access data/statistics, as well asreduces the labor intensity of management personnel. Sponsor will facilitatemeetings with Internet of Things (IoT) Chinese research institutes andcorporations that are actively involved in RFID technology and solutions. Thesponsor hopes that by the end of this project, students will have a stronggrasp of current RFID solutions for parking management systems and be able tomake recommendations for new or improved systems (could be hardware orsoftware, depends on the interests of the students) and verify theirfeasibility. This sponsor has worked with project teams in 2016 and 2017.
Topic 4: How to Run a Crypto Community
Building up a community is one of the mostimportant foundations for a successful blockchain project. The crypto communityplays a very important role in marketing, ICO, business development, investorrelations and market value management. Telegram, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook,GitHub and other social media networks are widely used in the crypto community. In this project, students will analyze the top 50 blockchain projects in orderto understand how demographics affect the running of a crypto community in itsvarious stages (e.g., pre-ICO , ICO, market value management) and giverecommendations on how to run a crypto community in its various stages. It’spossible that this project could be broken into components for teams to tackleover the next two or three years. Sponsor is looking for a diverse team, withpossible backgrounds in software, finance, and marketing.
The sponsoring organization, AminoNet, is aninternational blockchain community. AminoNet is about connecting idle computingresources together to provide a distributed cloud service.
Topic 5: ChinaModel of Consumer Finance Expansion Research
The Internet and associated credit markets are nowwell developed in China. Sponsor company is looking to expand beyond China. Inorder to do so, sponsor desires WPI team to determine applicability of Chinapractices to specific regional markets, namely India and Indonesia. Questionsto consider include, how would the socio-political and economic structures inIndia and Indonesia impact adoption of Chinese credit practices in thosecountries? What is the current state of Internet-based credit and bankingsystems in Indonesia and India? How do these compare to those in China? Whatregulations and practices impact a foreign company setting up shop in thetarget markets? Note: There might be some travel involved for this project. Ifthis were to happen, sponsor would pay for travel expenses.
Topic 6:Children’s House and Montessori Education Best Practices
The Children’s House is a Montessori School inHangzhou. In fall 2018 we are opening a bilingual Montessori program alongsideour Chinese program. We are looking for team to do investigative research ofbest practices for Montessori Schools around the world. Specifically, we wantto know if our current practices at the Children’s House align with bestpractices around the world, and in particular with the United States.
Sponsor has three targetaudiences in mind: administrators, teachers, and students/parents. Areas ofinterest include:
1) Are thereopportunities to set up observations at Montessori Schools in the United Statesor to establish exchange programs?
2) What online andoffline resources are and should be available for our teachers?
3) Are summer programs atthe Children’s House a good idea in terms of exchange programs or extratraining? Are they viable?
4) Should the school havea web-based platform or app as a teaching tool and/or resource center?
More detailed project description will be presented to team.
