If there’s one thing the English love, it’s tea!
From high tea to afternoon tea (yep, there is a difference), English people have a long-standing love of this heart-warming drink – and they’ve got the mealtime traditions to prove it.
Let’s take a look at the differences between these two tasty bits of British culture

What is high tea?
Well, high tea falls between 5 and 7pm, and was the evening meal of working class families in Victorian times. High tea time included a hot dish of meat and vegetables, bread, and a large pot of tea for everyone, followed by cakes with butter and jam. Sometimes there would be cold cuts like ham.

Afternoon tea’s aristocratic roots
Back in the 1840s, wealthy folk began taking tea as a late afternoon meal, and even turned it into a social event. The Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Russell, apparently complained about having a ‘sinking feeling’ in the afternoon, and so started having a pot of tea and a light snack to perk herself up. At first she did this alone in her boudoir, but soon started inviting friends.
Nowadays, people from all backgrounds enjoy afternoon tea. If you decide to throw your own, play Duchess for the day by holding your cup with your pinkie sticking out.
