Johann Dück (Right), JOMOO Design DirectorPhoto by Daniel Banner Johann Dück, Design Director in JOMOO European Operations Center. He is an award-winning designer with 17 years of international experience. His main focus is user-centric and brand-specific design of products around the house, such as sanitary, kitchen, consumer electronics, furniture, etc. Today we interviewed Johann and he shared with us his views on kitchen and bathroom product design, the customers' future needs and the mega trends in the industry. Q1: Why does kitchen & bath product design appeal to you? Johann: We have a huge impact of digitalization and health as a mega trend on the bathroom and kitchen. So these products in the bathroom are starting to get smarter and smarter. And we are at the point where we can be the first to design these products, to create a new interaction with these products. And it’s really interesting for me to combine consumer electronics and sanitary industry together.
People pay much more attention to the bathroom, they spend much more time there than in the past, so this room becomes more and more humanized. People want products which are not just cold and white. They want products that look more like in the living room with more materials which they see and choose in their living rooms. That’s the reason why we are getting more surfaces and ceramic. Now we have some materials like wood in the bathroom, and we have some materials like leather, also in the bathroom. We have intelligent light which gives you warmth and also wakes you up in the morning or warms youin the evening so that you can fall asleep. Bathroom is getting more and more humanized, fitting more and more human needs, not just cleaning. JOMOO Collection Q2: How do designers in JOMOO remain user-centric while designing products? Johann: I will show you the difference between how we designed in the past and now. In the past, designers created the products and brought them into the market. The process was really fast and really easy. But right now, users are very satisfied—they have enough choices in the market. So we have to create the products that really fit their needs.
And the questions are how we can understand these needs, and how we can find the solution for their pain-points. So for that, what we need in the beginning of designing process is to ask them "What is your pain-point?", and "What is your problem?" To ask about their wishes or their dreams, and to understand them. In the designing process, we have to analyze them before starting the first sketch. We have to understand their problems, and find solutions. During the process, we have to create several prototypes and show the users the product again and ask them “Do we understand you in the right way? Is it the product you like?” And if they say “Yes, absolutely!” Then we can go step by step and implement that into serial products and bring them on the market. We have a round and interactive process and ask users all the way and all the time during the development: Are we on the track? Are we in the right direction? And then, I think, in the end, we will have a really successful product on the market. We have to work in a more open way, we have to interact with users more and more, and not to do our development in a top-secret area and just in the end, “Ta-dah! Here is the product!” This user-centric process gives us much higher chances to create really successful products than in the past.
Q3: What do you think is the future lifestyle and user needs? JOMOO Public Restroom Suite "SYS-1" Johann: Today we have two mega trends that impact our business, digitalization and health. These mega trends will influence our bathroom products in the future, and I think, if we combine sanitary products with these two trends, we will create new products, new services and give the user a really great experience. Our product will be more and more intelligent and these products will interact with our consumers in different ways. Suite "SYS-1" got the "Best of best" of ICONIC AWARDS 2019 Q4: Which experience and feeling will JOMOO bring to consumers in the next few years? Johann: Our products will be much more user-friendly, and they will give the users an opportunity to let the products understand and meet their needs. And the interaction will be much easier than today and these products will be more intelligent in the future. They will have a feeling that is really welcoming, and I think that will happen in the next few years or even months. Stay tuned for KBC 2021 in Shanghai! Photo by Daniel Banner
