万圣节起源于古代凯尔特宗教
在英国和欧洲其它地区的Samhain萨温节。
秋末时，凯尔特人认为人类和
幽灵世界间的屏障变得越来越稀薄。
于是凯尔特人为吓跑鬼神，
特意举行一场盛大的聚会。
后来，随着基督教的发展，
这一天便被称为万圣夜，
也就是11月1日万圣节的前一天。
Halloween began as the festival of Samhain.
It was part of the ancient Celtic religion
in Britain and other parts of Europe.
At the end of summer, the Celts thought the
barrier between our world and the
world of ghosts and spirits got really thin.
The Celts had a big party. It was all about
scaring away the ghosts and spirits.
Later, with the Christian religion,
the day became known as All Hallows' Eve
the day before All Saints' Day on 1 November.
19世纪，爱尔兰人移民到美国，
万圣节文化在美国日益丰富。
譬如孩童们“不给糖就捣蛋”的传统，
逐渐成为电视节目、书籍和电影素材重要的一部分。
Irish immigrants to the United States raised
the popularity of Halloween
during the 19th century.
During the 20th century it
became more and more popular,
with traditions like pumpkin carving and
trick or treating becoming part of TV shows,
books and movies.
