
Founded in 1903, Finca Torremilanos in Aranda de Duero is the second-oldest wine-producing estate (after Vega Sicilia) in what is now known as Ribera del Duero DO. The current regime dates to the late 70's and was instrumental in the establishment of the DO in Spain in 1982.

Pablo Peñalba Lopez acquired the Finca Torremilanos estate in 1975 with originally 60 hectares of vines, (now expanded to almost 200 hectares of vineyards)—seven years before Ribera del Duero was even recognized as an appellation. He immediately began producing estate-bottled wines of remarkable quality, moving away from the former practice of selling bulk grapes to the local co-op. Pablo continued to develop and showcase the potential of the land across a wide range of soils (sand, rounded river stones, clay, limestone) and exposures.

By the early 2000s, their eldest son, Ricardo, had stepped into his father’s role and began investigating organic and biodynamic farming methods, including returning to horse-plowing, hand picking, and native-yeast fermentation. In 2015 they became the first in the appellation to be Demeter certified. Since 1988 they have even produced their own barrels of French and American oak at their in-house cooperage.

Pilar Pérez Albéniz, one of the most respected women in the region and winner of the inaugural ‘Ribera Heritage’ Award in 2019, is still at the helm, with two of her sons, Ricardo and Vicente, handling winemaking and sales respectively. A family-run gem that marches to the beat of its own drummer in producing both traditionally-styled and experimental wines.

In this 100% biodynamic farm, the family pursues the creation of biosynergies, a wine-growing philosophy in which animals, plants, land and the man works together. Their goal is to maintain a sustainable and self-sufficient farm with biodiversity of flora and fauna. To have a living, structured and more fertile soil. The care of the vineyards is the most important. The character of Finca Torremilanos wines is unique, it is determined by the typicity of the microclimate and soils on the farm.

THE FOUR KEYS OF TORREMILANOS BIODYNAMIC AGRICULTURE
1. VEGETABLE COVERS
In order to have a well-structured soil, we work with plant covers sown and spontaneous.
Root underground allowing the entry of air and, therefore, allow us to have more more alive soils (fungi, bacteria, insects and worms)These covers provide organic matter that soil life can transform into mineral salts to feed the plants.

The contribution of a compost of animal manure provides our soils with an extra dose of organic matter that feeds the life of the soil and turns into salts for plants. This compost comes mainly from sheep that graze freely on land that borders the farm and the river Duero.

3. PHYTOTHERAPY
In Finca Torremilanos we use medicinal plants by means of infusions and macerations in order to regulate the presence of fungi and stimulate the defenses of the strains. We apply vegetable extracts with chamomile, horsetail, nettle, valerian, yarrow and dandelion.

4. BIODYNAMIC PREPARATIONS
Biodynamic preparations are mixtures of mineral, vegetable and animal substances that, exposed to natural forces for a while, allow a return to their habitat to be altered. They serve to give life and activate different elements that are in our floors and that are also essential for the proper development of the plant.
🌱Preparation of dung in horns, increases the activity of organisms in soils.
🌱Preparation of silica in horns, stimulates the activity of the leaves of the plant.
🌱Fresh yarrow flowers in deer bladder, activates the processes of sulfur and potassium.
🌱Chamomile flowers in cow’s small intestine, stabilizes nitrogen.
🌱Buried nettle bundles, promotes the structure of the soil and its fertility.
🌱Old oak bark in pet skull, activates calcium processes and promotes formative forces to prevent disease in plant.
🌱Dandelion in cow mesentery, concentrates the silicic acid.
🌱Pressed fresh valerian flowers, prevents frost and is added to the compost.
🌱Boiled horsetail stalks, helps prevent the formation of fungi

Special mention for Peñalba Lopez Brut Nature, 99.9% of wines from this region are red wines and it is the only authorized D.O. Cava made in the Ribera del Duero region. This Biodynamic Cava from Finca Torremilanos is certainly a rare find! Fine bubbles, green apple notes, and smoothness which highlight the “terroir”.

The amazing Peñalba Lopez Blanc, medium-bodied white wine with honey, dried fruits, and quince notes alongside hints of oak, complex, elegant, and creamy, ideal to match with mussels or even Lomo Embuchado.

A classical Ribera del Duero D.O. red Wine Los Cantos with the pure expression of Tempranillo grape, full of floral notes alongside spices and red fruits which pair amazing with octopus and mature cheese.
"Los Cantos" means river stones, and the talented folks at Finca Torremilanos use them to distinguish their five parcels situated two kilometers, one might say a cantos’ throw, south of the river Duero.

Torre Albeniz, a flagship of this winery, made with grapes from old vines in Ribera del Duero, full-bodied with ripe red fruits, velvety texture, and mature tannins, the best match for a great paella.
