It is rather unusual to find a built archipelago in the sea.
It is even more uncommon to see that it is protected by a parasol creating a rain of light.
--Jean Nouvel
The Louvre Museum is located at the estuary of Saadiyat Island, where the sea and the desert meet. When looking from the sea, you can see the museum at a glance, as if it was suspended between the sea and the sky. Its huge dome makes it a new landmark of the city. The dome consists of eight different layers: four outer layers clad in stainless steel and four inner layers clad in aluminum separated by a steel frame five meters high. The pattern is repeated at various sizes and angles in the eight superimposed layers. Each ray of light must penetrate the eight layers and then disappears gradually. At night, it forms 7,850 stars visible from both inside and outside. It creates the art of the ‘rain of light’. The visitor will not feel hot during the day time and can see the stars at night. Walking through the museum, you can see natural light dreamily permeating the entire space whilst the breeze blows, making the entire building poetic and picturesque.
Artemide Cata TIR
“Illuminating the Abu Dhabi Louvre required a projector capable to adjust the light-to-shadow ratio, as well as to integrate into the large roofing and produce a well-defined flow of lighting on the works on display. The performance requested of Jean Nouvel for the museum was very specific and should satisfy several requirements to both integrate with the project for the large perforated roofing and enhance the museum display. We promptly realized that Cata was the ideal product for this project,” says architect Carlotta de Bevilacqua, “ because, as an open platform, it could provide a comprehensive solution to all needs. Its ability to support different optical units allows to obtain the necessary lighting performances.”

Cata TIR conveys patented optoelectronic innovation, ensuring top-quality lighting and accurate control of emission, focus, operation, and top-level colour rendering. The Cata projector can adjust to the continuous changes in the natural light that penetrates through the huge dome, providing flexible, controlled, and punctual illumination of works of broadly different dimensions, materials, ages and style. Each individual appliance is set to specific illumination level, which is kept constant in time as natural light conditions change, in full respect of the works on display and of the light scape created inside the museum.
